Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions vs Strawberry Seals Recap June 8, 2024

The Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions visited the Strawberry Seals on Saturday for a chilly but fast meet. We saw many new winners and All Star qualifiers, highlighted below. Not surprisingly, the 8&U mixed relays had spectators on their feet as the Sea Lions B team edged out the Seals by 0.1 second for the win! The 15-18 mixed relay won by .06 seconds in a come-from-behind race with Charlie Wolf making up ground in the Fly and Holly Hovey pulling it out at the last second in the Free. Moving on to freestyle, we saw Anabelle Shaw win the Girls 9-10 50Y Free, with a personal best time that qualified her All Stars. Anna Burch showed intensity and won the Girls 13-14 50Y Free.

The following Sea Lions went 1-2 in their Backstrokes, crushing it in pairs (take a bow): Ellery Olson and Ruby Cowling (Girls 8&U), Robert Franklin and Calvin Beauchamp (Boys 8&U), Emerson Parker and Dorian Betti (Girls 9-10), and Soren Scozzaro and Ronan Yoshida (Boys 9-10). Baxter Dixon (Boys 11-12) came out of a "No Time" in the Backstroke to take the win with an All Star qualifying time. Dax Fowler (Boys 13-14) came in as the second seed to win the Backstroke with a personal best time. Aero Holt (Boys 9-10) showed great determination as he won in the 100Y I.M.  Zoe Singleton (Girls 11-12) had an incredible day with three personal best times (and wins) in her Free, Fly, and I.M. Ben Wolf (Boys 13-14) collected 2 nd and 1 st place finishes in the Free, Fly, and I.M. and the team relays. Henry Hirsch (Boys 13-14) and Caroline Hyer (Girls 13-14) pushed hard in the Free Relays. As icing on these performances, a whopping 118 Sea Lions got best times on Saturday!

It was a victorious day, full of true Sea Lion spirit and camaraderie. Way to show up SHST!

All Stars Meet: June 15 for Qualifiers only

For those of you that made All Stars, read on and look for a seperate email on how to declare for the meet. For those that didn't make All Stars, you have a weekend off.

All Stars is a league-wide way of recognizing and rewarding swimmers for achieving designated qualification times. Swimmers who achieve the Q time in an event are invited to attend the All Star meet which takes place in June each year. Swimmers may qualify in up to 5 events, but may only swim in 3 individual events at the meet. For more information, go to the MSL All Stars page.

When a swimmer achieves an All Star time during a meet, an “a” is noted in the meet results.  The meet at Strawberry was the final chance for swimmers to qualify.

You sign up for events at All Stars just as you do for any other swim meet on our website. The sign up link will be sent out today to those who qualified.  Look out for this email later this morning from Erin Hill.

It is Sleepy Hollow's trun to host the All Star meet this year. It will take place this Saturday ,June 15th at Archie Williams. There is not another dual meet that weekend (*note- this is different than previous years).

Many parents have already signed up to volunteer- and thank you. If you have a swimmer who has qualified and you will be attending the meet, and you are willing to take another volunteer shift (they will be shorter than dual meets) please email [email protected]We are now looking for people to take back up shifts.

June Fun!

Friday, June 28: Pups Meet & Pancake Breakfast!

While the entire team has been practicing and racing this season, we have little Sea Lions just starting out through the Pups program. On Friday, June 28 we get to see all of the Pups’ hard work pay off at their very own home meet where they race each other and get a little sense of what these Sea Lion meets are all about. Come to the pool and support our soon to be Sea Lions at this adorable and special event! We can cheer on these Pups as they swim and race each other. Come enjoy the last day of the season with pancakes, followed by a lot of cheering for this year's Pups. Breakfast is served for the 10 & Unders starting at 8:00 AM, followed by the 11 & Ups at 8:30 AM. The Pups meet starts at 9:00 AM. There is no SHST practice that day.

Friday, June 28: Shave Down

All 11 & Ups are invited to come to a Shave Down & Pasta Potluck Dinner to get ready for Champs. Shaving is a ritual swimmers perform before a big meet to reduce frictional drag and get into a fast mindset! And don’t worry, if you don’t want to shave, you don’t have to! Come have fun with your teammates and carbo-load before Champs!

If you do want to shave, please bring your own razor and shaving cream. We'll have buckets of water and band-aids on hand in the unlikely event of a nick.

Congrats to the Swimmers of the Week!

Group 1: Isla Manning & Caleb Giese

Group 2: Evan Hyer & Charlotte Fearnow

Group 3: Jacob Brennan & Emme Parker

Group 4: Hollis Gibson & Emily Woods

MSL CHAMPIONSHIP MEET and Champs Dinner: June 29th and 30th

Hard to belive we are nearing the end of the swim season.  At the end of June, ALL SWIMMERS are invited to swim at the final League-wide swim meet. There are NO qualifying times like there are for All Stars.  Please come for this truly exciting meet at College of Marin’s IVC campus in Novato on Saturday, June 29th. It is the culmination of our swimmers' hard work this season when we swim against every other MSL team. The Sleepy Hollow Swim Team has won Champs for 28 years in a row and we have every intention of keeping this incredible streak going!

AND REMEMBER EVERYONE MUST VOLUNTEER if your child is swimming at this meet. This is IN ADDITION to your regular volunteer job.

The very next evening we invite you all to join Coach Mark and Coach Paul, and your fellow teammates to commemorate the end of the season with dinner and an awards ceremony.  Come break bread and celebrate our amazing kids on Sunday, June 30th! Doors will open at 4:30pm, and dinner will be served at 5:00pm. See flyer below for menu, and to buy your ticket.  Purchasing your ticket now helps us plan for numbers.

Ribbon Boxes

Ribbons from the weekend's dual meet will be available in file boxes on the snack bar starting Tuesdays. There are slots sorted alphabetically by last name - please only remove your family's contents and instruct your kids to to the same. Ribbons are awarded to all 12 & Under swimmers in all heats and events. Ribbons have a sticker on the back with the event, time and place.

Look out for Best Time Ribbons! Swimmers collect Best Time ribbons and can then earn stars, which can be sewn onto the back of a sweatshirt.

Ribbon boxes may include:

• Colored Heat Place Ribbons - labeled with your child’s name and the heat details on the back.

• Yellow Best Time Ribbons - earned when a 14 & Under swimmer swims a faster time in a particular event than he or she has previously in the same season.

DQ Slips - a slip could mean a suggestion from a stroke and turn judge or a DQ. Treat these as learning opportunities… read the slip with your child, communicate with the coaches, and help your child learn how to improve their strokes.

• Swimmer of the Week Photos - will also be filed in the box after they are pulled from the board (do not remove them from the board yourself – thanks).

• Other paperwork – such as team photo order forms for next week's photo day.

Read more on our website on ribbons, best times and stras, DQs, and other awards. If you believe there is a mistake with your child's ribbons, please double check on the results sheets and write it on the clip board next to the ribbon box. We will look into it and correct any mistakes.

Traffic Circle Guidelines & Changes on Butterfield Rd.

Traffic Circle Guidelines
We are implementing some new rules around the traffic circle. Parents- use the Traffic circle ONLY TO DROP OFF your swimmer(s). To PICK UP your swimmer(s) please park in the parking stalls to wait. Waiting in the circle is blocks others, as well as causes back-up onto Butterfield, blocking residential driveways and the bike lane.

Traffic Changes on Butterfield Rd.

We want to bring your attention to a safety improvement along Butterfield that is welcomed and supported by the Swim Team. Bike lanes have been painted on both sides of the road, and “No Parking” signs are going up this week. Be prepared for a substantial change in parking availability along ButterfieldParking in a bike lane, even partially, is prohibited (see illustration below)We will need to get acclimated to the changes and how they affect parking. More information to come as it relates to parking for Home Meets. Thank you for partnering with us to create safe bike lanes for walkers and bikers- our neighbors and our children.

Parking and Driver Safety

Please be aware of increased pedestrians and bikers around the Clubhouse, with the start of swim team. Be very careful when walking along and crossing Butterfield Road. Help teach our Sea Lions to be responsible pedestrians and bikers. If driving, slow down and focus. When dropping off your swimmer and/or parking for practice:

  • Do not park in front of the Clubhouse, this is strictly for drop off.

  • Park perpendicular (not parallel) in the gravel spaces to maximize space for other people.

  • Please don’t ever park in the no parking zones across from the Clubhouse or in the handicapped parking spot in front of the Clubhouse - not even to wait for your swimmer after practice/ if you remain in the car.

  • Please do not let your child "jump quickly out of the car" in the middle of the road.  This is not safe!  Please take the extra minute and use the drop off circle.

  • Use the dirt walkway in front of parked cars, and do not walk on the bike path on Butterfield, behind parked cars.

  • Do not block driveways or mailboxes.  Please be respectful of our neighbors!

  • And again, please slow down, and watch out for Sea Lions and parents crossing Butterfield and riding and walking in the bike lanes. These Sea Lions are all of our children.

Bikes

As we partner with the Sleepy Hollow Homes Assocation to increase safety along Butterfield Road, we encourage families to bike to and from practice, if your child is ready for this.  As a community, we are working to decrease the number of cars along Butterfield Road. If you bike, please remember:

  • Please use the bike racks outside of the main black gate and do not block the Fire Zone/No Parking area.
  • Don’t forget to bring bike locks! SHST and SHHA are not responsible for lost or stolen bikes.
  • Bikes are not allowed inside the gated pool area.

No Dogs

Please remember that the Sleepy Hollow Homes Association forbids dogs at the Clubhouse and pool area. Swim team families MAY NOT BRING DOGS to practices or meets. Dogs may not be tied up or left outside the gates and fence in front of the Clubhouse, even if you are just running in to drop off your swimmer. Please help us abide by this SHHA rule and leave your dog at home. Thank you!

Raise the Bar

The Sleepy Hollow Swim Team is proud to be partnering again with Raising the Bar, Keep Youth Events Substance Free. The goal of this important county-wide initiative is to shift the norms of substance use and encourage healthy choices by keeping youth events substance free. Thank you for keeping our swim team events substance free.

Donations

As a volunteer based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, we rely on swimmer registration fees and generous donations to help us operate while maintaining and building upon our incredible community. Donations specifically help us do this while expenses and costs continue to rise. Donations to our team also help us fund the many FUN events that we host during the season where kids build camaraderie and get to know each other outside of the pool (movie nights, karaoke, casino night, etc).

Every dollar and donation counts! You can donate any amount to our team HERE, and/or donate/sponsor a specific Fun event HERE. Your donation will be tax deductible to the extent permitted by law.

We would like to thank Zamira Solari Realty for sponsoring the team's Fun Fridays again this season! Thank you to the Clarke Family and Celebrations of Marin for donating to the Champs Dinner again this year. We appreciate your generosity and support!
