A Response to Concerns Around ICE Activity in Minneapolis

I have received several emails lately, primarily from our out-state teams, with questions and concerns around campus security and safety in light of the recent protests and stepped-up ICE and DHS activity in Minneapolis. Concerns range from moving around campus without being hassled by either group, being caught-up in protest activity, safe parking facilities, and finding safe hotel space near campus.

Does the U of M have any guidance they can offer to campus visitors to help ease their concerns?

The response:

Hi PJ-

Thanks for reaching out. I wish I had magical words to ease your concerns about what is happening in Minneapolis right now, unfortunately, I do not. I can say that we have procedures in place for our staff should an incident with ICE agents happen in our facility, and that UMPD is aware of our event schedule and does increase patrols around our venues when we have events. We have not seen the type of ICE/DHS activity on campus that you are likely seeing on TV/Social Media, and we have not had any incidents at the Aquatic Center, or any of the other athletic venues. There is safety in numbers, so my best advice for arriving at, or navigating around campus is to be in a group and be aware of your surroundings. We are committed to having a safe competition, and we will do everything within our power to ensure it.

As for hotels, here is a list the University Events Circle has developed. Hotels are obviously not advertising whether or not they are housing ICE/DHS agents, but there are properties that so far have not been affiliated with ICS/DHS:

In Minneapolis:

Radisson Red Downtown Minneapolis

Hotel Alma

Nicollet Island Inn

The Royal Sonesta Minneapolis Downtown

Days Hotel

In Roseville:

Avid Hotel

Country Inn & Suites

Tech Suit Rule Clarification (12 & under)

For the purposes of this championship YMCA meet, “age” is determined by a swimmer’s age on December 1, 2025 (as stated in the meet handbook under Championship Procedures and Operations: Meet Format). For that reason, it is possible for a swimmer to be in the 11-12 age group even though they are actually 13 years old. Technical swimsuits, therefore, are only allowed for swimmers in the 13 and over age groups, and must meet all requirements of USA Swimming technical rule 102.8. Swimmers that are "swimming up" to another age group must still conform to the rules of their individual "age" determined age group.
