Head Coach Derek Smith has been involved with the Northern Virginia Swimming League (NVSL) for over 35 years. He grew up in Annandale, VA and started his swim career at age four, swimming for the Wakefield Chapel Wahoos. Once he aged out of NVSL, he wanted to continue sharing his love of the sport, so he took an assistant coaching position with Wakefield Chapel during his summers home from James Madison University. This evolved into head coaching, at Wakefield Chapel, Ravensworth Farm and most recently at South Run- coaching the Seahawks for the last nine years. In addition to summer coaching, he works full time as an Aquatics Director for Fairfax County Park Authority where he plans and oversees pool operations and swim classes for all ages. He lives in Springfield, VA with his wife and two daughters, Finley and Gwen. He is excited for them to follow in his footsteps and looks forward to another great season! Go Seahawks!
