The Fort Washington Sharks Swim Team operates as a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Our success is and ability to provide a quality swim experience for all participants depend entirely on the dedication and support of our volunteers. Without the active involvement of parents and community members, we simply cannot run meets, organize events, or support our swimmers effectively.
Volunteering is not a requirement but an opportunity to be part of a thriving community and directly contribute to the development and enjoyment of our swimmers. Whether you are timing races, organizing the swimmer lineup, or helping with concessions, your contribution makes a significant impact.
In the Prince-Mont Swim League (PMSL), dual meets rely heavily on parent volunteers to function smoothly. Each team is expected to provide a range of certified officials and general volunteers to ensure fair and efficient competition.
Key Volunteer Roles and Requirements
Each team typically supplies the following certified officials:
Referee: Oversees the entire meet and ensures compliance with rules. Requires prior experience as a Stroke and Turn Judge and completion of PMSL certification clinics.
Starter: Initiates each race and manages the start process. Requires PMSL certification.
Stroke and Turn Judges: Monitor swimmers to ensure legal strokes and turns. Certification through USA Swimming clinics is mandatory. FW Sharks will reimburse the cost of clinics ($30 for non USA Swim Members)
Head Timer: Organizes and oversees the timers, works with other officials for accurate record keeping
Timers: Each team provides multiple timers to record swimmers' times. No experience or training necessary.
Clerk of Course: Organizes swimmers before their events. Tolerance for chaos is recommended
Announcer: Makes event announcements and keeps the meet moving.
Data Manager: Manage the meet's timing and scoring software.
Runners: Transport time sheets and other materials between officials.
Concessions: Assist the Concessions organizers with set up, sales, and break down.

Certification and Training
To become a certified official (Referee, Starter, or Stroke and Turn Judge), volunteers must attend PMSL-sanctioned clinics and pass a certification test. These certifications are typically valid for 15 months. Alternatively, individuals with current USA Swimming credentials may also qualify.
