HOX Head Coach Sean Quackenbush: A Lifelong Commitment to Swimming and Community
As Blackhawk Country Club’s Aquatic Director and Head Coach of the Blackhawk Swim Team (HOX), Sean Quackenbush brings years of experience and passion to the pool, inspiring swimmers of all ages to reach their full potential.
Sean’s journey through competitive swimming is a testament to dedication, resilience, and passion. His training and commitment earned him a place on the USA National Swim Team, leading to competitions in the U.S. Olympic Trials, World Cup Games, and the U.S. Open, where he secured both gold and silver medals.
Family Life Sean has been married to his wife, Natasha, for 21 years, and they have two sons. Ian, a sophomore at UC Merced, studies aeronautical engineering, while Kai, a high school sophomore at Contra Costa Christian School, plays volleyball and is active in the school band.
From Swimmer to Coach Born in Rochester, Minnesota, Sean began swimming at age seven with a local swim team. While most of his friends moved on, he fell in love with the sport. With both his father and grandfather being competitive swimmers, it was almost inevitable he would follow in their footsteps.
During his senior year at high school, Sean earned a Minnesota State High School Championship. The following year, Sean swam on a full athletic scholarship at the University of Minnesota from 1988 to 1992, earning titles such as Big Ten Champion, NCAA Division I medalist, and 11-time NCAA All-American. His accomplishments led to induction into the University of Minnesota Aquatics Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Rochester Minnesota Hall of Fame in 2024.
A Passion for Coaching Sean’s coaching career began in 1993 as a Graduate Assistant at Michigan State University while pursuing his master’s degree in sport psychology. Over the years, he has coached swimmers at all levels—from high school and recreational teams to elite collegiate and national-level athletes. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to see swimmers develop skills that last a lifetime, both in and out of the pool,” he shares.
Bringing His Expertise to Blackhawk Sean joined Blackhawk Country Club in 2015. At the time, Sean was working in Research Administration at Kaiser Permanente. When the opportunity to coach full-time arose, he jumped at the chance. “I am so glad I did because this job has been so rewarding and fun,” he says.
As Head Coach and Aquatics Director, Sean has led the HOX Swim Team to five consecutive VSA League Championships and six consecutive undefeated VSA dual meets seasons. More than just a swim team, HOX has become a community where swimmers develop teamwork, discipline, and a love for the sport. Through the Junior Coaching program, many swimmers grow up to become junior coaches, gaining the opportunity to mentor and train younger athletes. This program not only strengthens their leadership skills but also fosters a supportive and connected swim community.
Beyond the Pool Outside of swimming, Sean enjoys hiking and woodworking. Hiking keeps him active and connected with nature, while woodworking provides a creative outlet. A lifelong sports fan, he follows the Minnesota Vikings and NCAA athletics, especially swimming. Sean’s journey from competitive swimmer to coach exemplifies a lifelong commitment to the sport and the development of young athletes. His story serves as an inspiration, proving that passion and perseverance can create a lasting impact in both the water and the community.
