Coaches’ Update:

What a WEEK! Following the Woodlands Invitational last weekend, long-time coach (and original Nightrider!), Coach Brad Hoy, joined us last Monday for some inspirational words and a workout for our older swimmers. His father, Walt Hoy, started WCSC back in 1961. Coach Brad will be joining us again this week as well! We appreciate his wisdom and leadership, and he will forever be a cherished member of our WCSC family. 💙❤️

Our 13-14s and coaches had the BEST time together at Hurricane Harbor last Tuesday! We enjoyed bonding while screaming on Honolulu Half Pipe and the Tornado, racing one another down the Typhoon slides, and running through the Breaker Beach wave pool laughing away!

The coaches also had a phenomenal time with our 13&Up age group at our Spaghetti Factory fancy dinner on Thursday evening! 🍝

This past week we had our final two dual meets at Larkey Sharks and home against LMYA. We honored our 18-year-olds who are completing their recreational swimming career this season. Thank you, Sarabjot Kullar, Kylie Deng, Michaela Baak, Bella Fonseca, and Lily Sanchez for your dedication to Walnut Creek Swim Club! We have loved cheering you on for many years, and also appreciate your devotion to coaching our younger swimmers as well! You will remain a special part of our WCSC family. (Sarabjot will be starting her freshman year at UC Berkeley, Kylie will be entering her sophomore year at UC Merced, Michaela will be entering her sophomore year at UC Berkeley, Bella will be starting her freshman year at DVC where she will also compete on their swim team, and Lily will be entering her sophomore year at CSU, Fullerton.)

This upcoming weekend is our version of the Olympics! The Walnut Creek Swim Conference’s league meet will be held at Heather Farms and it will feel much like the Walnut Creek All City Meet. Clerk of the Course (swimmer check in) will be in the same place as All City. There will be finals for individual events at this meet. Conference entries are submitted as of Monday, so there will be no changes permitted. Relay line-ups will be posted both on OnDeck and emailed out to you. The A and B relays are chosen based on the fastest combination of times. Thank you to the families who have emailed to let me know of any important details such as only being available for a relay one of the days and not both. We are not able to check in to the Clerk of the Course unless we have all four members of the relay team present, which means no one on a relay squad is permitted to swim twice. Alternates (if available) will be listed, and entered in a relay in case of emergency or illness of a relay member. More information will come in an email.

We have a lot of relays who have already qualified for the Contra Costa County Swim Championships! Woo hoo!! Gold caps for relay teams will not be given out until Tuesday of county practice week. We will send out county relay line ups after the conference meet has concluded and we have final individual times from this weekend’s competition. Our outstanding line-up of individual qualifiers will be recognized that week as well.

We will begin our taper this week, and practice will become much easier for our swimmers. We’ll be practicing lots of starts, turns, and finishes to prepare for Conference. It’s important that every swimmer is eating healthy, resting, in the shade as much as possible, stretching, and hydrating.

We will be welcoming back Coach Alex from his vacation on Tuesday morning! If there are any emails you would usually send to Coach Alex prior to his return, please send it to me (Emily) at [email protected]

Let’s finish this season strong! We are so proud of our swimmers!! Gooo Walnut Creek!

Meets:

Meet Results:

@Larkey Sharks

    WCSC:    327

    Larkey:    484

Vs. LMYA

    LMYA:     232.5

    WCSC:    412.5

We won our 2nd dual meet of the season against LMYA!  Congrats to the whole team.  We wrapped up our dual meet season with 2.5 total wins, beating Pleasant Hill Dolfins and LMYA, and tying with Dewing Park.  This is our highest win total in years, and another reflection of how much our team is improving week over week and season over season!

Jobs:

Thanks to all of you who have already signed up for conference meet jobs!  There is still an opening for clerk of the course Sunday PM shift, so please sign-up if you haven’t done so already.

Conference meet shifts start at different times so please check your sign-ups. You also must be flexible with the end time of the morning shift and the start time of the afternoon shifts as it depends on the timing of the meet and the lunch break.  All jobs will be checking in with conference representatives, not with Walnut Creek Swim Club, so please include your contact information on your job sign-up if you have not done so already.  More information on where to check-in for your jobs will be sent by email later this week.

Congrats to all of our swimmers who have made the county meet!  If you are attending county meet, there may be additional volunteer job requirements.  We will find out any assignments soon and will notify families of any requirements.

Apparel:

Conference t-shirts will be arriving this week! The Nightriders will deliver swimmer t-shirts on Thursday, 7/25!  Let’s get excited for our 80’s theme and accessorize with some neon glasses, headbands, and sweatbands! Here are some fun ideas on Amazon!

New Families:

Lots of exciting things are happening in the upcoming week!  Conference Championships are this Saturday/Sunday, and end of the season pool party on Sunday after Conference Championships.  (This meet is run very similar to All City.)

Important: Please mark your swimmers races/heat/lane on their hands or back.  There is a Clerk of the Course at Conference and it gets crazy.  Having their races written on their body helps get the swimmers to the right lane/heat and helps make the meet run in a timely manner.

Your swimmers will be getting a Surprise on Thursday evening.  Nightriders will be arriving each swimmers home between 5-9:30 pm to deliver surprises and conference t-shirts.  Feel free to give them cupcakes, cookies, or throw water balloons or shoot water guns at them.  Please have your swimmers wear their t-shirts to the meet.

Also, please make sure to go through the file boxes at practice this week to make sure you have picked up all of your ribbons from the season.  The ribbons are in your swimmers file folder.

This has been an incredible year and let’s go out with a bang. Wear Red, White, and Blue and your WCSC SWAG and let’s represent and show how amazing it is to be a part of our team.

LASTLY, Right after Conference Championships end on Friday, grab some food and head over to Larkey Park for a TEAM Pool Party!  Everyone is welcome to swim, relax, and hang out.  It is a great way for us to wrap up the season.

Some things you can do this week:

  • Create a poster or good luck goody bag for your Big or Little Buddy
  • Make posters or cupcakes/treats to thank the Nightriders and coaches when they show up at your home on Thursday evening
  • Have fun with your friends and WCSC family!

Coach Appreciation:

15&Up FAMILIES.  During the week of July 22nd it’s your turn to make sure our coaches feel that WCSC love!   Please have your kids make a card, write a letter or bring a token of gratitude to practice for, Coach Abby, Coach Emily, Coach Alex and Coach Tyler and don’t forget the fabulous junior coaches.  Click here for a  sign-up genius and sign up to bring a special treat for them and/or our junior coaches.  Short on time…Venmo @Sawyer-Austin (last digits 5484) with the memo “15&Up coaches appreciation” and I will put it towards a collective gift. Once you sign up, if you need ideas for coaches'  favorite items, email me at [email protected].
