Coaches Update:
For these next two weeks of practice, we will be focusing our training on butterfly, while continuing to review freestyle and backstroke. Our youngest and new swimmers will be learning butterfly basics, and our more advanced swimmers will be improving their technique and endurance.
Families, these are some ways you can work with your swimmer at home to support their butterfly progress:
- Core Strengthening Exercises- Planks, leg raises, & flutter kicks on the floor can help build strength for fly.
- Dryland Exercises- Mimicking the butterfly motion on land focusing on your child’s breathing pattern and timing (you’ll see us coaches do this frequently with swimmers prior to competing in fly at meets).
- Flexibility Training- Encourage your child to stretch at home AND before swim practice, with focus on their upper body, legs, and hips so they can improve their range of motion. Butterfly requires flexibility, especially in the ankles and shoulders.
- Watch video of butterfly races- Sit with your child and watch professional swimmers compete in butterfly to study their technique and understand how to apply what they are learning with us in practice. Eventually, you can have your child study video of their own butterfly so they can highlight ways to improve (body position, rhythm, timing, etc.)
In just a few weeks we will have our full coaching staff and our high school aged junior coaches back at the pool! Thank you to all families for your flexibility this spring, as we look forward to having more coaches on deck and in the water to properly differentiate our swimmers into leveled groups within their age groups.
In the next few newsletters, I’ll let you know some facts about the main coaching staff so you can get to know us a little better!
Our 2025 coaching staff comes to you as proud, former swimmers of Walnut Creek Swim Club (Tyler, Bella, & Lily) and Woodlands Swim Team (Katie & Emily). We have all qualified for the Contra Costa County Swim Championships in both individual and relay events, and have broken quite a number of records between us as well. The five of us have a passion for recreational swim team! There is no where else we would rather spend our spring and summer than at Larkey Park Pool with all of your amazing families helping give your swimmers the memorable experiences that we also grew up with! Just for fun- here are our personal favorite events to swim:
- Coach Lily- 100 Free, 50 Fly, 100 Back
- Coach Bella- 100 Back, 100 Fly, 100 I.M.
- Coach Katie- 100 Back, 100 Fly, 50 Back, 50 Fly
- Coach Tyler- 50 Breast, 100 Breast, 100 I.M.

REMINDER: Dual meet jobs sign-ups will be released on Saturday, May 3rd at 8:30am. For the 2025 season, all families are required to sign up for 6 dual meet jobs. Job sign-ups are first-come, first-serve so sign up early to get the time slots and jobs that you want. All dual meet jobs for the season must be signed up for by Saturday, May 17th or your swimmer cannot compete in meets.
If you are a former competitive swimmer or have prior swimming experience then please consider volunteering to be a stroke and turn judge for our meets. Those that are interested should reach out to Shandon Quinn, the WCSC Head of Officials, at [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.
We also need someone to do Newsletters if you are interested in a remote job, however this is a weekly job throughout the season.
If you have any questions, please contact Kris at [email protected]. Thanks in advance for making this a great season with your support!
Social Events:
Saturday, May 10th Parent Social 4:30-11:00- Grab a babysitter (Night Riders make excellent babysitters) and come on over to the Fairholm’s. We LOVE our swimmers, but this evening is for parents only.
Come get to know some team parents, play some cornhole, and connect! Bring an appetizer or dessert to share and we will have pizzas and drinks and the rest!
Please include what you will bring in the SignUpGenius notes so we don’t end up with too many duplicates.

ALL CITY:
Hey WCSC families! - All City Meet is the weekend of June 28-29th, and our team’s big fundraiser. Over the weekend we raise a significant amount of our revenue which keeps our fees low and our coaches paid! It doesn’t come without a little teamwork though - all families are expected to work 2 half-day shifts during the meet and either set up on Friday or take down on Sunday. Please plan your calendars to be a part of this fun weekend!
ALSO - We are looking for leads with the experience and desire to help manage ads/shout-outs, a trained graphic designer for the event logo and event program, and an early bird for managing parking logistics that weekend. Just shoot an email to [email protected] for more info. Cari Dubois-Wright (Membership Chair)
Apparel:
We’re excited to share that we have a new team t-shirt in the works and hope to have ordering information soon!
If you still need to order your team suit, please visit our online WCSC Elsmore shop to get yours soon! They also have goggles, fins, and WCSC swim backpacks!
Please reach out with any apparel questions at: [email protected]
New Families:
I hope your swimmers are having fun and looking forward to Time Trials! We also hope as parents you are planning on stopping by the Parent Social on May 10th! This is a great way to meet other families and we have a lot of fun.
I hope to finalize family buddies tomorrow and will get the spreadsheet out very soon, so you can connect with your family to ask any questions you may have and touch base with them prior to May 18th.
I am also happy to answer any questions you may have as well. [email protected]
