Cohasset Swim/Dive Team Guidelines
Welcome Cohasset Swim/Dive Team Members
For those of you who are not familiar with the swim and dive team, we have provided for you an excerpt of the teams’ bylaws dealing with our purpose and philosophy:
(1.1) To provide for an organized summer recreational swim and dive competition among young men and women between the ages of 7 and 17.
(1.2) To create an enjoyable and positive atmosphere for training and competition that emphasizes participation and instruction in the fundamentals of good sportsmanship and team spirit
(1.3) To provide the resources for young men and women to enhance their knowledge of proper technique and training methods as related to swim and diving competition
(1.4) To promote swimming and diving as a healthy form of exercise, personal growth and competition
(1.5) To encourage the novice swimmer or diver to participate on the team without experiencing the “pressure” that may be associated with year-round competitive programs
Each year, we look forward to a summer of fun, skill development and competition. The following are some guidelines for team members which we hope will be informative and help to ensure a summer of safety and enjoyment.
- Please check your email, as well as the website for any and all updates from the coaches! The staff does its best to be as informative as possible
- Swimmers and divers are expected to arrive for practices 5-10 minutes ahead of their pool time. Attendance will be taken at each practice. Swimmers will be required to swim at designated times only.
- Caps, goggles, and water bottles are helpful for each swimmer and diver during practices. Additionally, a "shammy" towel is suggested for divers.
- Team suits and caps are required for meets
- Unsafe behavior in or out of the pool will not be tolerated at any time! The coaches reserve the right to ask any swimmer or diver who is acting in an unsafe manner to sit out the practice. A second infraction will be followed by the parents/guardians being contacted to come pick up the individual.
- Swimmers and divers are asked NOT to arrive any earlier than 10 minutes prior to practice or stay beyond their practice time unless accompanied by an adult. The coaches cannot be responsible for team members beyond the designated individual practice time. Please keep in mind that transition time between age group practice sessions can be confusing and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation in making it as smooth as possible. Parents are asked to wait outside the pool area.
- Edit your meet commitments online using the EVENTS tab. Deadlines for meet commitments are very strict. Failure to do so (unless an emergency arises) will result in not being permitted to participate in the meet--members of the staff will not discuss these instances any further.
- Your child may not always be swimming many individual events or may be swimming in a second or third heat. In addition, your child may be asked to “swim-up” an age group. This allows more swimmers to compete and provides your child with an opportunity to improve his/her own personal times. Please remember the purpose and philosophy of the teams (as stated by the bylaws). The coaches will make every effort possible for each child to participate in meets as much as possible. According to League rules, each swimmer may participate in a maximum of four events per meet, with a maximum of three individual events.
- Our team would not exist without volunteers. We are ALWAYS in need of people to help out in several areas. Every parent is expected to volunteer at a minimum of 2 meets per season--or will be subject to a $100 fine, that will go towards the Cohasset Swim and Dive Team Scholarship Fund.
- All swimmers and divers must be paid and registered prior to the first practice---NO EXCEPTIONS. In addition, team participants must be paid members of the Cohasset Swim Center. If you have not paid AND signed a waiver form, your child will be asked to sit and watch the practice. Due to liability issues, the swimmer or diver will not be allowed in the water until payment is made. Additionally, team members will not be allowed to participate in swim or dive meets unless payment or special arrangements are made.
