Swim Meet Cheat Sheet

Lauren Wagner

We’ve developed a list of what you need to do in order to be prepared for meets as a member of the Cohasset Swim Team!

Before the Meet

  • Register your swimmer, in Team Unify, for the meet before the deadline.  Decline if your swimmer is unable to attend.

  • Opt-in to volunteer and sign up for a job in Team Unify. You must pay the $100 volunteer fee if you are unable to volunteer for two meets.

  • Bring water for home meets.  We require water donations to keep volunteers and / staff hydrated.  All age groups will be asked.

  • Wear a team suit, bring: google, team swim cap, water bottles, sunscreen, an extra towel and an extra shirt.

  • Check Your Email!

    • Coaches send out meet information weekly (at minimum).

    • When heat sheets are available beforehand please bring your own copy to the meet.

    • Write all of your swimmer’s information in permanent marker on their arm before arriving at the pool.

    • This includes:  EVENT #, EVENT NAME, HEAT,  LANE.

At the meet

  • Arrive early for warm up.

  • 8&U parents - introduce yourself and your child to the age group coordinator.

  • Stay with your child and listen to event numbers to ensure they make their race.

  • Swimmers may not be left unattended at swim meets.

  • Swimmers are not allowed to talk to the starter.

  • Keep the area behind the blocks clear. Only coaches, timers, and coordinators are permitted in that space.

  • Be quiet behind the blocks so that the swimmer on the block can hear the start of the race.

  • Save chatting with coaches / volunteers for after the meet.

  • Bring your own chair and help us keep the pool area clean.

Helpful Definitions:

Age Group

Swimmers of the same age range,  also grouped by gender

The age groups are:   8 and under, 10 & under, 12 & under, 14 & under, and 17 and under.

Backstroke Flags:

Flags that are 5 yards from each end of the pool.  Swimmers should learn how many strokes they need to take to get from the flags to the end of the pool.

Disqualification (DQ):

When either the starter or a stroke-and-turn official raises their hand to signify that a swimmer has been disqualified from an event because the stroke or turn was not performed prosperity.  With the exception of freestyle, there is a proper way to swim each stroke.  If a swimmer does not conform to the standard, a DQ will result.  Coaches will instruct swimmers on proper technique.

False Start:

When one or more swimmers leave the starting blocks before the starter begins the race or if during a relay, a swimmer leaves the block before the prior swimmer touches the wall.  In the first scenario, one “false start” is allowed per swimmer.  On the second false start the swimmer is disqualified.
