Brian Heaton Head Coach (Platinum/Gold/Silver)

Coach Brian Heaton begins his 6th consecutive season with the Makos.  He brings 23 years of club and high school coaching experience to the pool.  Coach Heaton swam as a club and high school swimmer in Indiana during the late 80's.  He began coaching at a YMCA at the age of 18 and later became the head high school coach at Terre Haute North Vigo High School in Terre Haute, IN.  Along with his high school coaching duties, he started the Terre Haute Torpedoes Swim Club in 1997.  He built this USA club to over 200 athletes and had several athletes qualify for USA Sectional meets, Junior Nationals, US Open and Senior National competition.  Coach Heaton has coached several High School All-Americans and seen his athletes move on to compete at the collegiate level.  He moved to Anderson, SC in 2007 and joined the Makos staff for four years helping to build a solid swimming foundaton at the Y.  After a brief sabbatical from coaching, he returned to the Makos in 2015 and has led the program to four CYSL Conference Championships, a Top 5 finish at the YMCA Upper Southeastern Regional as well as coaching ten athletes to the YMCA National Championships.  In 2022, he was named the South Carolina Swimming Coach of the Year.  Coach Heaton is a social studies teacher at Glenview Middle School. He resides in Anderson with his wife Quincy and their daughter Kyle.   

Franklin Little Assistant Coach - Gold

Coach Hunt begins his fifth Fall season with the Makos as a coach.  He got his first taste of coaching in the summer of 2019.  Hunt gained swimming experience as an athlete with Makos for 6 seasons.  During that time he was a YMCA Regional Qualifier and captain of the TL Hanna High School Swim Team.  He went to college at Clemson University where he got a degree in Industrial Engineering and swam as a member of the Clemson University Club Team. In his time as a coach he has had multiple state finalists, regional top 3 swimmers, and two swimmers qualify for YMCA Nationals. He has coached all levels within the Makos program and is currently our primary Gold group Coach. Outside of swimming Hunt enjoys watching football and baseball and working out. He is very excited to be able to give back to his old team and teach a new generation of swimmers.

Jamin Benitez Assistant Coach - Bronze

Jamin is beginning his second season coaching the Bronze Team for the Makos.  He has been a swimmer on the Makos for the past five years as well as an athlete for the TL Hanna Swim Team.  Jamin qualified for the YMCA National Championships as a senior and is also very active in his church.  Jamin was an excellent student and leader in high school and even seved as a Junior Marshall for Graduation.  Upon graduation, he will continue his education at Anderson University where he will contrate on Christian Studies.

Jose Macias Assistant Coach

Jose is a former outstanding Makos athlete and currently swims for the Clemson Collegiate Swim Club.  For the past four years, during the spring and summer months he serves as an assistant coach with various training groups.  When not at the pool, Jose is an engineering student at Clemson University.  He enjoys his opportunity to work with younger athletes and share his knowledge and experience.  Swimming runs in his family as he has two younger brothers that swim for the Makos.

Genevieve Bronson Assistant Coach - Blue

Genevieve has been a member of the YMCA aquatic staff for the last three years.  She teaches advanced swim lessons throughout the year and has run our Developmental Groups in the past.  She also served as a developmental coach for one year at the Columbia Family YMCA.  She returns to us as our lead developmental coach for Blue 1 and Blue 2.  Genevieve is also employed by Anderson University focusing on computer technology.
