Myrtle Beach Riptides Makes Waves at Swimming Championships
The Myrtle Beach Riptides swimming team competed in their first South Carolina Swimming State Championship February 13-16, 2009 at the Middle Tyger YMCA in Duncan, SC. Eight members of the locally based swimming team traveled to the competition, featuring nearly 600 of the State’s finest young swimmers.
While the SC Swimming State Championships was going on, Hunter Lineback, a sophomore at the University of Tampa (FL) was competing in his college’s conference championships in Charlotte, NC.
When the pool finally settled and points were tallied, the fledgling Riptides posted an 8th place overall team finish out of 20 teams participating, and was the highest placing team from the Grand Strand area. The girl’s team posted a 4th place finish and the boy’s team finished in 13th.
The Riptides success accounted for forty-six Top-10 finishes and 13 event wins, 13 National Club Swimming Association Junior National qualifying times (NCSA q-time), and 9 SC Swimming state records.
Highlights:
Chad Bateson, 11-12, swam to a best time in the 500-yard freestyle and competed in the 400-yard Individual Medley (IM) and 200-yard freestyle.
Eddie Bateson, 11-12, competing in just the 100-yard backstroke, swam a best time.
Julia Campbell earned eight Top-10 finishes in the 11-12 division, including 3 podium finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle and 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events. J. Campbell earned 10 personal best times.
Lauren Campbell, 15-18, competing in her first State Championship as a senior, had nine Top-10 finishes including 3 podium finishes in the 1650-yard freestyle and 100- and 200-yard backstroke events.
L. Campbell earned a new NCSA Junior National Championship q-time in the 1000-yard freestyle, swimming to 10:20.3. L. Campbell owns an NCSA q-time in the 1650-freestyle and bonus q-times in both backstroke events.
Megan Kingsley, 11-12, competing in her final State Championship in her current age-group left her mark on SC Swimming. Kingsley, in just one meet, basically re-wrote the record book, breaking an unprecedented 9 state records in the 100-, 200- and 1000-yard freestyle events; 100- and 200-backstroke events; 100- and 200-butterfly events; and 100- and 400-IM events.
Kingsley also earned six additional NCSA Junior National q-times in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events; 100- and 200-yard backstroke events; and 100-butterfly event and 400-yard IM; Kingsley already owned a NCSA Jr. q-time in the 200-yard butterfly. Kingsley went a perfect 11-for-11 in event wins, adding wins in the 500- and 1650-freestyle, and won the 11-12 age-group high-point award.
Keenan Lineback, 15-18, was runner-up in high-point scoring in her age-group and earned the Riptides ten Top-10 finishes. Lineback successfully defended her title in the 1650-yard freestyle, swimming to a 17:03.8 and finished on the podium in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events and 200- and 400-yard IM events.
Lineback earned a new NCSA Jr. National q-time in the 1000-yard freestyle, swimming to a 10:16.3, and bettered her current NCSA q-times in the 400-yard IM, 200-yard butterfly and 1650-yard freestyle; Lineback also owns an NCSA q-time in the 500-yard freestyle.
Phil Mustert, 15-18, competed in his final SC Swimming State Championship as an age-group swimmer. Mustert earned seven Top-10’s, finishing on the podium twice. Mustert won the 500-yard freestyle and left the meet with eight personal best times.
Jesse Perl, 13-14, completed the 2009 Myrtle Beach Riptides State Championship team. Perl had seven personal best times and placed in the Top-10 in his best events – the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes.

Hunter Lineback competed in the 2009 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships, earned three NCAA Division-II National Championship "A" qualifying times in the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle events and the 400-yard IM. Lineback’s times were 4:33, 15:50 and 3:58, respectively. This will be the first time Lineback will compete at the NCAA D-II Nationals, to be held March 11-14, 2009 at the University of Houston (TX).
