Jeffrey Julian Director of Coaches & Program/Pro Coach

Coach Jeff

Coach Jeff has joined us following 18 years as Head Coach of Rose Bowl Aquatics, where he took the program from 146th in the nation to being a top 25 team and back-to-back Western Junior National Champions and winning USA Swimming’s West Speedo Summer Championships in 2021.

As a swimmer, Jeff spent his entire career based in Southern California, representing Industry Hills Aquatics Club and the University of Southern California. During his time at USC, he was an 8-time All-American, Pac 12 Champion in the 200 Fly and 800 Free Relay and finishing his NCAA career with a 2nd place finish in his specialty event. Racing nationally and internationally, Jeff was a US Open Champion, a member of the USA Swimming National Team, and silver medalist at the World University Games (97).

As part of his 18+ years at Rose Bowl, his swimmers broke 100’s of team records, earned spots on the USAS National Junior team, and moved on to become NCAA Champions and All-Americans. Jeff also has experience at both the pro level, while working with the ISL team Cali Condors as their head coach and at the college level as an assistant coach at USC. At USC, he worked mainly with the breaststrokers and flyers, who became National Champions in individual and relay events. He also worked closely with Jason Lezak from 2007-2012 and was honored to be selected by Jason for the Ikkos Award at the 2008 Olympics.

On the personal side, Jeff earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from USC and his master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University. He is married to USC Hall of Fame swimmer and award-winning coach, Kristine Quance Julian, and has one son, Trenton Julian, who just finished his collegiate career at the University of California, Berkeley by helping the Bears win the 2nd National Championship during his time there. Trenton was a 10-time All-American and a multiple-time Pac 12 Champion.

Coach Sarah Dawson began coaching with the Nadadores in September 2009.  After completing her undergraduate degree from California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo (B.S. in Biology), she obtained a job in Thousand Oaks working for a biotechnology company.  While there, she decided to get back in the world of swimming, as she had a long history as an athlete in Southern California Swimming, and decided she would like to return to the sport that she loved, but in a coaching capacity.  She started her coaching career as an Age Group I coach in 2002 for CLASS Aquatics in Westlake, CA.  While working there, her love of the sport drove her to re-define her career priorities and decided to return to Cal Poly and receive her M.S. in Physical Education and Sport Studies with an emphasis in Sport Psychology.  While going to school for her graduate degree, Sarah became the head coach for the San Luis Obispo Girl’s Swimming and Dive Team in 2006.  In her two years of coaching at the high school, she coached two League Championship teams and brought many individual athletes to CIF.  In 2006, Sarah also became the Senior Coach and Head Age Group coach of the San Luis Obispo Seahawks, bringing many athletes from being unable to make a JO cuts to Sectionals athletes.

Sarah’s coaching philosophy encompasses the positive attributes of the team’s philosophy and also allows for her athlete’s to make their own informed choices with a complete understanding of the appropriate consequences that come along with their personal choice.  Sarah is here to solely coach and to guide based off of her expertise in swimming and in coaching and to utilize her background in Sport Psychology to aid her athletes in their personal journey towards success in sport and in life.          

Logan Redondo Head Senior Division Coach


Coach Logan

Logan started swimming when he was five-years-old at the Mission Viejo Nadadores, and he hasn’t stopped since.

Over the course of his swimming career, he spent almost 14 years with the Nadadores, and the majority of those years were training under the legendary Coach Bill Rose.  Logan was able to represent the Nadadores at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Trials, finishing 18th in the 1500m freestyle at the 2016 Olympic Trials.  Logan also swam for 4 years at the University of Minnesota, under Head Coach Kelly Kremer, and represented Minnesota at the Big Ten and NCAA championships. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a BS in Kinesiology, with an emphasis in Sport Psychology.

Upon returning from college,  Logan began working in swimming as a learn-to-swim and competitive swim instructor. Soon after, he returned to the pool deck as a coach for the Mission Viejo Nadadores. He spent two years working with both age-group and senior level swimmers and was mentored by some of the best coaches in the swimming world. While working as Coach Mark Schubert’s assistant coach,  Logan helped coach and develop a junior national champion, national age-group record-breakers, and Olympic Trials qualifiers.  Logan also spent time as the Dryland Coordinator and Senior Coach for Santa Clara Swim Club, where he continued to help develop athletes to Olympic Trials, Junior Nationals, and Futures.

My primary goals as a coach is to help athletes find joy in the water, continue to grow in the sport long-term, and challenge athletes to constantly pursue excellence both in and out of the pool".

Bryan Dedeaux Head Age Group Division Coach

Coach Bryan Dedeaux started coaching in 1990 with the Colony Red Hots swim team in Irvine, California. In 1999, Bryan took his abilities and unique style to the world famous Mission Viejo Nadadores to further gain knowledge in teaching and coaching at a more competitive level. 

With the Nadadores, he worked closely with many world class coaches including Siga Rose and Jim Montrella. Bryan’s versatility afforded him unique opportunities to coach all levels and ages within the program until settling in as the 10 and under division director in 2004. He has since developed many of the top 10 and under athletes in the United States.  

In 2010 Bryan was awarded the Southern California Age Group Coach of the Year. He has headlined and presented in numerous coaching clinics and teaches the ASCA Level 2 Stroke School.  Bryan also spent a year working for the Irvine Unified School District gaining experience in child development, helping students with special needs, and developing after school programs.  

He currently is a NAFC Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Functional Strength Coach and trains athletes and general population clients at Functional Sports Performance in Irvine, Californa. Bryan became the Mission Viejo Nadadores dryland director in 2017 and developed a comprehensive and progressive teamwide strength program for high performance enhancement and works directly with the National team in the weight room.

Kristine Julian 13/14 Division Director

Coach Kristine

Coach Kristine brings a depth of experience in swimming that not many can match. Whether it be her years of experience on the US National Team and multiple international competitions as an athlete or her years spent at every level of the sport as a coach, it is that knowledge and experience that she is excited to share with our Nadadores family.  

On the coaching side, Kristine has spent time at USC, CLASS, Rose Bowl, and UCLA before joining the Nadadores, with 18 years being building Rose Bowl’s move from 149th  in the nation to Junior National champions. During her time in Pasadena, Coach Kristine spent time at every level of the team, including winning multiple American Swimming Coaches Association Age Group Coach of the Year awards in the process. She also spent time leading the National Group to new heights and helped start the run to Rose Bowl being back-to-back Winter Juniors champions.  

As an athlete Kristine accomplished incredible things during her 10-year career on the US National Team. During those years Coach Kristine had accomplishments including being named the Swimming World Magazine American Swimmer of the Year in 1997, earning a gold medal in the 1996 Olympics, and breaking an American record in the 200 Breaststroke, just to name a few. On the college side, she was instrumental in leading USC to its’ first and only Women’s swimming NCAA team title, its’ first ever NCAA relay title, 8 individual NCAA titles, was a 23-time All-American, and is now a member of the USC Athletics Hall of Fame.  

Coach Kristine is excited to be joining the Nadadores family and looks forward to helping the team move into the future. Married to new pro/post-grad coach, Jeff Julian, and mother of national team athlete, Trenton Julian, it is a special experience to be on deck together as a family and helping build a bright future for the Nadadores.

Kristeen Gracia 10&U Division Director

Coach Kristeen

Kristeen Gracia started swimming competitively at a young age for San Jose Aquatics in Northern California. Her accomplishments, drive, and love for the sport inspired  her first job in high school. Working with the Swim America program, she began teaching swim lessons and water safety to swimmers of all ages at her local community pools. Shortly after, she started coaching entry-level and competitive Novice level swimmers in 2006 with Monterey County Aquatics.

In 2009, she took a break from coaching to pursue her college education and returned to the pool deck 3 years later. Under the management of Mark Schubert and Tracy Maurer,  Kristeen began teaching private swim lessons and coaching age-group swimmers at Golden West Swim Club. In 2016, she added high school swimming to her coaching career as Head JV coach for Ocean View High School (Golden West League Champions 2016(M/W) and 2017(M)). Kristeen is excited to join the Mission Viejo Nadadores community and is looking forward to sharing and broadening her knowledge and expertise with its swimmers and staff.

Asami Uzawa Junior Teams Division Director


Coach Asami

 

Asami has spent the last 20 years poolside - first as an athlete and then as a coach. 

 

Her swimming career began with the Mission Viejo Nadadores at the age of 10 and she continued swimming with them for almost 10 years. She had the privilege of swimming under Coach Bryan Dedeaux and Coach Bill Voigt. She competed with her high school, Capo Valley, for 3 years and then with Saddleback College. During her 2 years with Saddleback College she earned records in all freestyle events and 200 fly, 200 back, 200 breast and 400 IM. 

 

She spent one year working as a sales associate with Competitive Aquatics Supply before beginning her coaching career with the Nadadores. From January 2007 through July 2008, she coached the 10 & Under Division with Coach Bryan and was Co-Director of the Novice program with Coach Siga Rose. 

 

After transferring to Cal State Long Beach, Asami began coaching with the Irvine Novaquatics at their Fountain Valley location where she coached the Bronze, Silver and Senior Varsity level athletes ranging from ages 8-18. After three years at this location she transferred to the Irvine Woollett Aquatic Center and became the Head Bronze Coach for 5 years coaching athletes 9-18 years old. 

 

Asami has her Bachelors in Science in Kinesiology emphasis in Sports Psychology with a minor in Psychology from Cal State Long Beach. She has also been with Irvine High School Boys swimming as an assistant coach since 2012.

Daniel Roa Senior Gold Coach

Coach Daniel

Coach Daniel Roa is originally from Bogota, Colombia. Daniel started his swimming career at the age of five. As a swimmer, he was able to achieve multiple qualifying times for regionals and national championships, getting to represent Colombia on multiple occasions.

Daniel moved to Southern California in August 2012 to attend Golden West College and swim under the guidance of Mark Schubert, where he earned multiple conference records and was awarded the MVP on his first season with the Rustlers.

Daniel started coaching in 2013 with the age group program at Golden West Swim Club, but his coaching and teaching experience goes back to his days in Colombia helping his dad on his swimming/triathlon team. Coach Daniel emphasizes stroke technique as a fundamental piece for a successful athlete at any given level, as well as establishing goals in order to have a successful and fun journey in the sport.  Daniel has been selected to be part of the coaching staff for the SCS All-Star Festival and North American Cup Challenge.“I will be at the pool every day building successful swimmers, and outstanding citizens”

Wade Nelson Senior Silver Coach

Coach Wade grew up in Southern California and started swimming at the age of 6 years old. As a swimmer, he was able to achieve times and compete at various levels of the sport including Junior Olympics, Sectionals, Junior Nationals, Nationals, and the 2016 Olympic Trials. In high school, he swam for Golden West Swim Club under Coach Mark Schubert before he went on to swim in college at the University of Wyoming. Coach Wade swam all four years of college and graduated with a B.S. degree in physiology.

James Reynolds Senior Bronze Coach

Coach James Reynolds brings over twenty years' experience to our program. Coach Reynolds' athletes have earned Junior Olympic, Sectionals, Futures, and Jr. Nationals. He was selected to attend the USA Swimming Leadership summit, has help run Southern California All Star Festival for the past 16 years, coached Southern California North American Challenge Cup for 7 years, coached and help run Pacific Coast All Star for 3years, and Selected to be the Head Coach for Western Zones. Coach Reynolds is a USA swimming Coach, and he is certified in American Red Cross lifeguard, First aid, CPR, AED, Oxygen administration and WSI. In the past has worked for Aquatics Programs for 17 years. He s even coach Para athletes.

Kimi Davidson 13/14 Silver Coach

Coach Kimi

Coach Kimi is in her 1st year with the Nadadores as the 13-14 Silver Lead. She was previously the Head Coach of Swim Torrance for 2 years and the Head Age Group Coach for 3 years. Prior to that, she was the 10&U and 13-14 Division Lead at SwimMAC Carolina in Charlotte, NC for 3 years and the Head Age Group Coach and Senior Assistant Coach at South Carolina Swim Club in Charleston, SC for 3 years.

Within USA Swimming, Coach Kimi has served on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council, was a SCS DEI Committee member, was the Pacific Committee DEI Chair, was a 3x attendee of the National Diversity Select Camp as an assistant coach and manager, was an assistant coach at the Southern Zone Select Camp, and coached on the South Carolina Zone Team and their Select Camp. She has 
attended the Women in Coaching Clinic, the ASCA World Clinic, USA Swimming's Women's Leadership Clinic, was featured in two Wednesday Webinars through USA Swimming, was was selected to attend the Ethnic and Minority Women in Coaching Leadership Conference, and was nominated for South Carolina Swimming’s Age-Group Coach of the Year.

As a swimmer, she lettered all four years at The University of Akron, where she graduated with a B.A. in Communications and a M.A. in Sports Science and Coaching. While completing her degrees, she was a 5th-year assistant coach to the University's team, head coach of the intramural club team (Akron Swim Club), an age-group assistant at Firestone Akron Swim Team, an assistant coach at the University at Buffalo Swim Camp, and an assistant coach at The University of Akron Swim Camp.

From novice to Olympic Trial finalists, Coach Kimi’s experience has allowed her to work with swimmers of all levels. Throughout her career, Coach Kimi has found that great technique, committment, and enjoying practices aid in developing character traits which will last a lifetime. When not at the pool, she enjoys traveling, being organized, reading, playing Animal Crossing, and watching Disney+ and Netflix.

Jason Black 13/14 Bronze Coach

Coach Black comes to the Nadadores from the state of Michigan where he started coaching 30 years ago in a private club summer swim league (MICSA) for the Detroit Yacht Club. The last seven summers Coach Black has been the proud coach of the Red Run Golf Club who also compete in the same summer league.

 

Over the past two decades Coach Black has primarily been a high school swim coach for three different programs; University of Detroit Jesuit and both Brighton High school programs (girls and boys). During Coach Black’s 38 high school seasons he has coached his athletes to over 500 state qualifying times, 89 NISCA All American honors, 23 individual state titles or runner up finishes, 15 state meet top 10 finishes, 14 Livingston County Swimmers of the Year, 3 MHSAA Swimmers of the year, and 1 MHSAA Diver of the year. He has also sent scholarship athletes to all NCAA divisions to compete and further their swimming careers at the college level.

 

Coach Black has four times been named Zone Coach of the Year along with being nominated for overall state coach of the year six times, winning the title in 2018. That same year (2018-19) he was nominated from the state of Michigan as the girl’s swim coach of the year for the National Federation of High School Sports (NFHS) and won the Central state’s section honor.

 

Coach Black is a proud Alum of Grand Valley State University earning two Bachelor degrees (History and Public Relations) in 1999 and a Master Degree in 2013 from Central Michigan University in Sport Administration. He also has been married to his beautiful wife Amanda Black for the past 15 years.

 

Coach Black has coached novice level swimmers to an Olympic Trial Qualifier and everything in between. He believes in creating a safe environment so his swimmers may work hard, have success, and sometimes stumble but all while being able to grow into better humans.

Christopher Mendoza-Smithour 10&U, 11/12 Silver Coach

Coach Chris Mendoza-Smithour hails from Fairfield, CA, a city in between the Sacramento Valley and the Bay Area. He grew up swimming with his local club team, SASO Swimming, for ten years, where he was able to develop a love for the sport of swimming. After graduating from high school, he attended UC Santa Barbara and majored in Sociology with a minor in Asian American Studies. During his undergrad, he would go back to Fairfield in the summer and coach with SASO as an Assistant Senior Coach. However, he was eager to coach during the school year, so he was given the opportunity to work with the Santa Barbara Swim Club in 2017, where he was the Head Developmental and Novice Coach. After graduating from UCSB in 2018, Coach Chris interned and worked for a technological innovation firm in the Philippines, but was still interested in coaching part-time. So when he returned to the US, he was given the opportunity to continue working with SASO Swimming while he worked remotely, and was a Lead Site Coach, as well as the Lead 8-10 Age Group Coach. He was able to send athletes to JO’s and Far Westerns, and had three athletes in the Top 10 Sierra Nevada LSC rankings of their respective age groups. He was also an Assistant Coach for the inaugural swim team at Vanden High School, where he aided in sending three athletes and two relays to CIF Sections, with one of them scoring in the Top 3 of the Junior Varsity Division.

Coach Chris is excited to bring his passion for the sport of swimming on deck, and to guide athletes to new heights in order to achieve their goals.

Ryan Wang 10&U, 11/12 Bronze Coach

Coach Ryan started swimming when he was 6. He joined Rose Bowl in 2007,   and found a passion and love for the sport under the guidance of Coach Jeff Julian and Coach Kristine Julian  . In 2013, Ryan was selected to represent his home country, Myanmar, at the 27th South East Asian Games. He went on to record multiple national records in the 400 Free, 200 Back, 100 Breast, 200 Breast, 200 IM and 400 IM.

Driven by an unwavering dedication for the sport and appreciation for the process, Ryan naturally gravitated towards coaching. His earliest experiences came from leading swim summer camps at Rose Bowl.

In 2021, he started as the Bronze Age Group coach at Max Aquatics. And ran the elite group at Lifetime Athletics in Virginia as the Assistant Head Coach. These chapters paved the way for his subsequent transition to the prestigious Nadadores. Coach Ryan remains dedicated to nurturing and shaping the future of swimming and   continuing and advancing Mission Viejo's legacy of excellence.

Robert Rose Coach Emeritus

Coach Bill Rose

Coach Bill Rose's brilliant career began at the University of the Pacific (1968-1974) where his team won two PCAA championships. He then built the DeAnza Swim Club in Cupertino, CA into the nation's largest club during his tenure (1974-1976). For the next three years, he coached the Canadian Dolphin Team of Vancouver, before taking the Head Women's Coach Position at Arizona State University in 1979.Coach Rose has served as U.S. National Team Coach in Bremen, Germany, and Head Coach of the Canadian Pan-American Women's Team, the Canadian World Championship Team, and the Canadian Commonwealth Team.

After a successful ten-year stint as vice-president with Dean Witter and Prudential Bache, Coach Rose returned to his first love, coaching, joining the Nadadores in 1992. Not missing a beat, Coach Rose served as a coach for the United States team in the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar Del Plata, Argentina and has been named to the staff of the U.S. World University Games Team competing in Sicily, Italy in August, 1997 and again on the 1999 WUG team competing in Palma de Mallorca, Spain as Head Women's Coach. Coach Rose then placed Chad Carvin on the 2000 US Olympic team as well as six athletes from other nations. He was then named Head Olympic Coach for Mexico after placing a number of swimmers on their team.

The recent years with the Nadadores have continued to be a "whirlwind" of accomplishment. In August 2001, Coach Rose was a coach for the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games held in Malaysia. In 2003, he was the U.S.A. Head Coach for the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The year of 2004 was very special. Coach Rose was able to put Larsen Jensen on the U.S. Olympic Team in Athens, Greece. It was there where Larsen achieved his dream and became a Silver Medal Winner in the 1500 meter freestyle and demolished the American Record by 11 seconds! Coach Rose was being named to the staff of the U.S.A. World University Games held in Turkey in August 2006. His protégé swimmer there was Justin Mortimer, who earned a Gold Medal in the 1500 meter freestyle. In 2007, Coach Rose was the Head Coach for the U.S.A. Open Water Team at the World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. At the same time, Coach Rose held a position on the Swimming Staff for the Melbourne events as well. In 2008, Coach Rose was named to the USA Olympic Team Coaching staff and was the Head Coach for the Olympic debut of the 10K; one of his swimmers, Chloe Sutton, was the first American woman to compete in this Olympic event. In 2009 he was appointed to USA Swimming's World Championship staff in Rome. In 2013, he coached the U.S. Junior World Cup Tour Team in Beijing, China, and Tokyo, Japan.

Along the way, Coach Rose received the highest honor that can be bestowed by his peers as he was inducted into the American Swim Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2006 and 2008 Coach Rose was named the Developmental Coach of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee. In 2013 and 2014 Coach Rose was selected as the Southern California Swimming Coach of the Year. Coach Rose's unique approach has allowed him to positively influence the lives’ of 1000's of swimmers throughout his career.
