Joe Wheeler Play-Day (6/26/23)

"Save the Date" for Joe Wheeler Play-Day

Hello MSA Long Course Swimmers!

Our annual Joe Wheeler Play-Day is scheduled for Monday, June 26!  We've normally chosen a Monday or Tuesday about 10 days prior to Southeasterns, but the Southeastern Meet is one week earlier than usual this year.  This would put our "Play-Day" on July 3 or 4, when several of our families are out of town and the campground is very crowded.  So we are targeting the day after the Huntsville Meet, meeting at 9 am at the Publix parking lot on County Line Road in Madison.  There won't be swim practice that morning, due to the long meet over the weekend, so everyone can be fully breakfasted prior to meeting at Publix, and we can caravan directly out to the Joe Wheeler State Park.  Friends/Families/Siblings are all welcome to participate!

Typically on our Play-Day there are several swimmers/families arriving and departing at the campground throughout the day, but for planning purposes you can expect to pick your swimmer up at the same Publix at 5 PM.

We will spend our day at the Joe Wheeler State Park "Day Use Area".  The charge to enter the "Day Use Area" is $5 per person.  The GPS mapping out at Joe Wheeler is really squirrely.  To get to the "Day Use Area", turn left onto McLean Drive at the big brown Joe Wheeler State Park sign (on Highway 72 about a mile past Rogersville), and stay on McLean Drive for a couple of miles, specifically a quarter of a mile past the turnoff to the Campground.  The "Day Use Area" will be on the left side of McLean Drive.

What to bring:

Money for entry to the park ($5)
Sports drinks and/or water
Fruit and snacks
Lunch food (sandwiches,etc)

Sunscreen, Hat, and sunglasses for sun protection
Frisbee/discs (there is an 18-hole disc-golf-course about 200 yards from the pavilion where we will be set up ... there is no charge to play on the course!)

Fishing Pole, Football, etc
Whatever attire you'll need for swimming, hiking, frisbee-golf, etc.

What will be provided:
Hot dogs & buns
S'mores
Several Campfire Chairs
Can Opener
1 Canoe
2 Kayaks
6 Life Jackets

Please plan to attend/decline on the Team Events to give us an idea of how much food to bring! Also, please coordinate carpooling with your teammates if you wish to ride together.
