This is one of two beginning levels designed for swimmers between the ages of 8 – 12 that at new to swimming and are striving to improve their swimming skills. The focus of this group will be to learn the fundamental of swimming such as legally performing all four strokes. Occasionally, the swimmers will be introduced to starting dives at the outdoor pool. Swimmers in this group should have a desire to compete in swim meets and championships meet at the end of each season. 

Next progression group – (depending on swimmers age) Bronze or Silver

Swimmers practice in the indoor Pratt pool at Mission Valley

  • Monday – Friday 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
  • Recommended 2-4 practices per week

Swimmers in this group participate in YMCA novice meets and YMCA all levels meets

  • Recommended meet participation 5 - 7 meets per full season
  • Fall/Winter season September to March
  • Sprint/Summer season  March to August

  • Must be able to listen to instruction
  • Learn to work hard and be encouraging toward your teammates

Minimum requirement

  • Able to swim 100 yards Freestyle (4 continuous laps) while demonstrating side breathing.
  • Able to swim 50 yards Backstroke (2 continuous laps)
  • Able to swim 25 yards Breaststroke and 25 yards Butterfly
  • Ability to listen and follow directions

  • 6 x 50 Free
  • 3 x 100 kick
  • 2 x 100 IM
