SWIM Academy Stingrays serves southeast Shelby County, TN as a full aquatics program provider. Our programs are designed to aid in the reduction of unintentional drownings through swim lessons, stroke development, and competitive swimming. We are committed to creating programs that expose, educate, and encourage minority youth to swim.

Exposure to swimming is vital to reducing the number of drownings. Basic water competency swim skills include ability to enter the water, surface glide, turn around, propel oneself for at least 25 yards and then exit the water.  

Education about swimming, also known as water safety, is one of the ways to reduce the number of drownings. Water safety education can be taught in the water or in a classroom. Water safety encompasses basic pool rules such as never swim alone, no running; how to properly select a life jacket; boating safety; skin safety (i.e sunburns, and spf content) etc.

Through exposure and education, the number of unintentional drownings for Black, Hispanic, and Latinx children can be reduced. Unintentional drownings are 100% preventable. Exposure to the water beyond a bathtub is necessary.

Swimming is more than a summertime activity. It is a sport, with an immense amount of opportunities that immediately become available as a minority swimmer.
