Interview: Getting to Know Coach David

A Richmond-area native, David graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Health and Physical education. While in college, he was both a swimmer and diver. 

Previously a health and physical education teacher at St Michael’s School, David joined NOVA in 1998 on a part time basis while working with the Collegiate School swim team and took over the Age group program fulltime in 1999.

Having coached summer league since 1983 and U.S. swimming since 1986, he brings almost 40 years experience to the deck. Over the years David has been involved with numerous summer league and US teams in the Richmond area producing many State champions, State record holders, National top 10 swimmers, several National Age group record breaking swimmers and relay teams along with Jr National and Olympic Trial qualifiers.  David also has been recognized by his peers being voted the Virginia Age Group Coach of the Year 5 consecutive years (2001 - 2006) and in 2016. He was also a top 10 finalist for the Fitter & Faster / American Swim Coaches Association Age Group Coach of the year in 2012 & 2016.

David has served as the lead coach for numerous groups in both the age group and senior programs throughout his time at NOVA. He is currently the lead coach for the Senior Development Silver and Age Group Development Gold groups in the afternoons and evenings.

He and his wife Jennifer, have two sons and a daughter, Quinn, Xander and Hayley. Xander currently swims with the ODU Swim team and enjoys teaching lessons for NOVA when he's in town. Hayley swam for NOVA from age 7 - 13 and has since been participating in her high school marching band and pursuing her graphic art skills. Quinn swam for NOVA from age 8 through his high school years and recently graduated from Georgia Tech with an undergraduate and master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering.
