Coaching Teams:  Travelers, Seniors

I have always loved the water. I joined the Spartan Sharks when I was seven years old and continued my swimming career at McFarland High School and the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. I have held various MSS and high school team records, as well as qualifying for Junior Nationals in 1999.

For 13 years, I coached McFarland High School Spartan swim teams, leading the HS Boys to six consecutive state titles and one state runner-up in 13 seasons, and two HS Girls state runners-up in six seasons. I have had the pleasure of coaching numerous state champions, record holders, and All Americans. One of my greatest honors was being named WISCA Boys Coach of the Year five times (2008-2012), and WISCA Girls Coach of the Year (2016).

I have worked with the Spartan Sharks since 2005, training swimmers of all levels, including numerous state, zone, Junior National, and Olympic Trial qualifiers. I was named Wisconsins Senior Coach of the Year for the 2017-18 short-course season.

My favorite part of coaching is developing lasting relationships with swimmers and celebrating their successes, whether participating in their first meet or qualifying for national-level competitions, and everything in between.

Sara Landolt Coach

Teams: All.

Coach Angie O'Donnell hired me in June 2011. Since then I've had the opportunity to work with MANY talented MSS coaches and to work with all of our practice groups. Along the way I've also served many terms and roles on our board, and volunteered for whatever needed to get done. I love our club, and its people. I love teaching, coaching, and building a team. I believe that swimming and reading are two life skills EVERYONE should have, and that they can take you anywhere.

At a time when our club had many coaches, I took a short break (to travel more and become a scuba instructor) and later returned to help during a coaching transition and never left. I've played & coached many things, from rec to D1, and swim is definitely a favorite. I love everything about the water, it is fascinating!

I also work at the AOAC as a lifeguard and senior manager. Over the years I've coached masters swim, swim lessons, adapative swim and gym swim. I am a PADI certified scuba diving instructor and love to spend my time underwater! I love caring for animals and have been able to take multiple trips to Belize to volunteer with manatees and monkeys at a special place called Wildtracks.

Ryan O'Donnell Coach

Swimming has been apart of my life for as long as I can remember, and I’ve been a member of MSS ever since my family moved to Wisconsin when I was 8 years old.

As an athlete growing up, I had the privilege of swimming for very talented MSS club and McFarland high school teams, which together led to a 4-year collegiate career for the UW Badgers. After graduating college, I fell into coaching and have been hooked ever since.

Ryan Julson Coach
My name is Ryan Julson and this is my first year coaching with Sharks. I live in Mcfarland with my wife Amy and two boys Isaac and Wyatt. I grew up in Mcfarland and swam with the Sharks myself from age 5 through high school. I still somehow hold the boys 8&U 25 yard breaststroke team record for the Sharks. As a swimmer my best stroke is breaststroke and I loved competing in breaststroke and IM events. In high school I qualified for the state high school meet all four years in the 100 yard breaststroke. Many years ago I had brief coaching tenures with the Stoughton Aqua Racers and Waunakee Rural Aquatic Team.

Outside of swimming I like spending time with my family, being outdoors and traveling. I enjoy hiking, playing sports with my kids and swimming masters practices in the morning. My favorite food is pizza or tacos.
Emily Peters Assistant Coach

I swam competitively for 8 years in DeForest before joining the Sharks senior team in 2013 and continued my swimming career at Minnesota State University. I have qualified for state throughout my swimming career, as well as zones and speedos, breaking many team records in DeForest as well as the state record in the 200 butterfly in 2010.

After retiring in 2017, I continued teaching swim lessons at the AOAC and in Sun Prairie for several years. I am so excited to get back with MSS and the swim team that brought me so many lifelong friendships! My favorite part about coaching swimmers is celebrating their wins, big and small whether it be learning a new stroke technique or cutting time!

Nicholas Bertz Assistant Coach

I've always enjoyed working with youth in our community, be it swimming, soccer, or school events. With two daughters on the swim team, I found myself drawn into the world of swimming. Honored to contribute to the Shark's success, I joined the coaching staff, bringing my enthusiasm and commitment to the poolside.

Since becoming a part of the swim team community, I have experienced the camaraderie amongst the athletes, families, and fellow coaches, making each day at the pool a rewarding experience. I am honored to be a part of the MSS organization and coaching staff. I look forward to contributing to the continued success of the program and the growth of its talented athletes.

When I am not coaching, I enjoy swimming, soccer, kayaking, bicycling, running, and hiking.

Ella Weaver Assistant Coach

Swimming and MSS have been a part of my life ever since I was 6 years old and have truly helped shape me into the person I am today! I swam competitively for 16 years, and the majority of those years were spent swimming for MSS and then McFarland High School. After graduating from high school I went on to continue swimming collegiately at UW-Eau Claire!

I am so excited to join the coaching staff at MSS and transition from swimmer to swim coach! MSS has given me the best memories as an athlete and has brought me so many lifelong friends. I can’t wait to have lots of fun on the pool deck and see all of the growth each swimmer has throughout the seasons!

Outside of the pool I love spending time with my family and friends, discovering new coffee shops, and reading a good book!

Gavin Reiser Assistant Coach

My name is Gavin Reiser and I am a senior in high school. I started swimming club when I was in third grade. I joined the Sharks when I was in the 8th grade. I also swim for the Stoughton HS team. I like swimming all of the strokes but my favorite stroke is breaststroke. One of my favorite swim memories is getting on the podium at Junior Nationals in California.

I also like golfing, fishing, and going on vacations with fun places to hike or swim. I am hoping to swim in college. I am really excited to be coaching this year. It has been a lot of fun so far!

Stu Schaefer Pool Director
Volunteer Coach / Director of Community Services and Programming
I love seeing kids build confidence in and out of the pool in the sport of swimming.  I have so many great memories and friendships as a swimmer and a coach.  I'm extremely proud of all our swimmers including our swim lesson program, high school swim teams, and the McFarland Spartan Sharks.
