LAKE OSWEGO SWIM CLUB

Lake Oswego Swim Club FAQs

Q: What is the swim team and why would I want my child to participate?
A: Our team is a year round competitive swim team offering high quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. The goal of our team is to provide every member an opportunity to improve swimming skills and achieve success at his or her level of ability, from novice to international competitor.

All of our coaches, as members of the American Swimming Coaches Association, have access to the most comprehensive training and certification program for youth coaches of any sport in the United States. They provide assurances that the time children spend in swimming will be quality time.

We are a non profit club run by an elected Board of Directors which meets each month. All members are welcome at each meeting and encouraged to be involved in team activities and fundraisers. It’s fun. It’s great exercise. It builds confidence. It’s a great way for your child to meet other kids in the neighborhood. It’s a great way for you to meet other parents.

Q: What swimming strokes does my child need to know to join the team?
A: If you child is 10 & under and can swim 25 yards (1 length of the pool) freestyle and 25 yards backstroke, they are ready to be placed on the team. If your swimmer is 11 & older we require them to be able to swim a length of freestyle, backstroke, breastroke, and butterfly.

Q: What is squad placement and what should I expect?
A: An assessment is an evaluation done by our coaching staff which will help us place the swimmer in the group that will match their age and ability level. Each swimmer is different and may or may not be ready. The assessment will be quick. Swimmers should be ready to swim with swimsuit, goggles, and a towel. If you are a senior level swimmer, please send an email to the Head Coach with a list of your previous times.

Q: What to wear?
A: Swimmers should come to the assessment ready to swim. This includes:
Proper swim practice attire and goggles. Call or email if you are unsure what this means. A swim cap is encouraged if the child needs one.

Q: How many practices are required a week?
A: Different squads have different requirements. Generally it increases with age as the swimmer becomes more committed. Like most things, swimmers get what they put in; the more diligently they attend practice, the more improvement they will generally. see.

Q: I just want my child to learn how to swim better. Do they have to swim in competition?
A: While competition is encouraged, it is not mandatory. As coaches, we like to use competition as a way to evaluate a swimmer’s progress using many different criteria, not just technique. Additionally, most swimmers find competitions fun, motivating, and a great way to make new friends!
