Officials 101: How do I sign up?
What's an official?
Officials are volunteer parents who have taken formal training offered through Swim Canada and Swim AB to help run swim competitions. We like to think of it as having the best seat in the house! You will be on deck helping in one of many important positions that are needed for the competition to go smoothly. Each position requires a different skill set, so there will always be a position that helps you play to your strengths! Officiating at competitions hosted by the Airdrie Phoenix Swim Club will help contribute to your volunteer commitment (1 Home APSC Meet + 1 Fun meet). Every APSC family must provide one parent/guardian to officiate at APSC's Fundamentals Meet + 1 of 2 Fun Meets. Below, please find more information regarding what is required of parents/guardians at the start of each season.
April Meet Sign-Up Form
Communication from February 21, 2025:
Hi APSC! We have two meets in April: April 6 (during practice, 6-8 PM) and April 26 (12-5 PM). The April 26 meet is our Club Fundamentals Meet, and volunteering is required to ensure it runs smoothly. Please review volunteer requirements and sign-up instructions on our website under the Officials tab, many of you still need to complete this step. Here’s the sign-up form, please fill it out ASAP, as I’ll be assigning roles soon. If you don’t sign up, I’ll place you in a role. All officials must complete the Intro to Officiating course and submit their waiver form.
Thanks!

I'd like to help officiate...what next?
STEP 1: Check that you have an active Swimming Canada Sportlomo account and that you are able to login. If you do not have a Swimming Canada Sportlomo account and/or you’re unable to log in, please email [email protected] to get this set up.
STEP 2 (IF YOU ARE NEW TO SWIMMING OFFICIATING): Once you’ve activated your Swimming Canada Sportlomo account, you’ll be able to to access your account. Start by taking the Introduction to Swimming Officiating clinic. Make sure to finish the entire e-module, so that the system registers the course as completed.
STEP 2 (IF YOU ARE NOT NEW TO SWIMMING OFFICIATING):
- Use the Swimming Canada Officials Certification Pathway as a guide.
- Go to the Swim Alberta Officials Clinics page to access e-modules, self-directed clinics, and information about in-person/online clinics.
- Email [email protected] to let us know you completed a new clinic and are interested in upcoming opportunities for on-deck experience.
STEP 3: Print out the Swim Alberta Officials Certification Card, which can be found under “Resources” on the Swim Alberta website.
STEP 4: Make sure to get it (Officials Certification Card) signed by the referee for your first 2-3 sessions in each new role. Once you’ve collected these signatures, you’ll be considered certified for that role. You will be able to receive related certification points and be able to move up the ladder to higher officiating levels in the future.
STEP 5: Save the following dates in your calendar and stay tuned for job sign-up emails!
- December 1, 2024 - Winter Fun Meet - hosted at Genesis Place
- April 6, 2025 - Spring Fun Meet - hosted at Genesis Place
- April 26, 2025 - APSC - April Fundamentals (home meet & sanctioned/official) - hosted at Genesis Place
