2024 Summer Provincial championships Recap

From July 11th to July 14th, the tournament capital city (Kamloops, BC) was home to the 2024 Swim BC Summer Provincial. Swimmers from 32 swim teams were present, and 450 swimmers participated in the top meet of the summer before the national meet in Toronto.

Gator Swim Club delivered good results, with 10 team swimmers, to conclude the season.

Thursday, A gold Start

Prelims

On the first day of the meet, six swimmers swam, securing two spots in the finals for the afternoon session.

Uma Sukkau and Sephora Lee open the Gators’ participation with the 100 FL, followed by Joshua Chan and Steven Ge on the 200 BR. Swimmers stayed short from the first final session. The last individual event of the session was 50 FR, and Gators Sephora Lee, Freddy Ding, and Jaden Leung were part of this event.

The morning session included the 200 IM Relay. Gators (Freddy Ding, Steven Ge, Kohen Lee, Jaden Leung) clocked 1:58.92.

Finals

Gators were represented in the first finals session by two swimmers. Freddy Ding (13-14) qualified 5th in the morning session and was the first finalist for our club, ending with a best time of 26.44. He stayed 5th overall. Jaden Leung (15-16) was the other finalist after qualifying 2nd in the morning session. Jaden was able to secure the first spot with a time of 25.26 in a very close race.

Friday, Full team show

Prelims

The second day of provincial races has the 100 BK, 50 FL, 200 FR individual events, and the 400 FR Relay. All Provincial gators swam this day. Freddy Ding and Ryan Wang open the session for the club swimming the 100 BK, allowing Freddy to qualify for his second final. Uma Sukkau, Sephora Lee, Isaac Lau, Freddy Ding, Ryan Wang, and Jaden Leung add a busy 50 FL for the club. Sephora was able to put her name in the finals for this event. All other swimmers stayed just out of the qualifying times. Jaden closed the individual events with the 200 FR just before the relays began.

The 400 FR Relay (Ryan Wang, Kohen Lee, Freddy Ding, Jaden Leung) was another highlight of the session as the team ended with a 3:52.28 new club record.

Finals

The team was back for the final session, and both Gator swimmers performed adequately after improving their qualifying spot. Sephora 50 FL was a closed race, seventh. Freddy Ding ended in sixth place after swimming in the 100 BK final.

Saturday, Record night

Prelims

In the second part of the Provincial meet, swimmers with high energy held up. Saturday morning began for the team with a 100 FR event swam by Sephora, Freddy, Ryan, and Jaden. Jaden did a great job qualifying sixth in the finals. At the second event of the third day, Steven Ge and Jaden Leung swam the 100 BR, staying just out of the top eight places for the finals, not before improving their times. The last event swam by Gators (Sephora, Freddy, and Ryan) was the 50 BK, allowing the team to have another finalist after Freddy qualified eight to the evening session.

Finals

Jaden and Freddy were able to set new team records. Jaden Leung claims the 100 FR club record for the 15-16 age group with a time of 00:55.21. No later than an hour after a second club record went down. Freddy Ding clocked 00:31.00 seconds to set a new 13-14 age group record. Regardless of their times, they fell short of the top three spots.

Sunday, One more chance

Prelims

With the last day of individual and relay events, our swimmers tried to keep the level shown in the previous three days. Regardless of swimmers being able to improve their times, it was not enough to be part of the last final session of the meet. Jaden Leung jumped in the pool first for his 200 IM participation, followed by Sephora Lee, Joshua Chan, Freddy Ding, Ryan Man, and Steven Ge in the 50 BR, concluding with the 200 BK by Ryan Wang.

With the summer provincial ending, the team closed its participation in the high-level swim meets, leaving just room for the National swim meet (July 24th - July 28th) that will be held in Toronto, in which Jaden Leung will participate.

The team has had positive results this season, and we look forward to preparing for an exciting 2024-2025 season.
