Calabasas Waves Development Swim Program

General Description:

The Calabasas Waves Developmental Competitive Swim Program is designed to teach the skills of each stroke in a gradual progression. The goal is to learn all 4 competitive strokes, turns and starts, to learn something new each day, and to have fun!

Any swimmer interested in joining will need to come for an assessment prior to starting with the Waves. Assessments can be arranged by contacting the Club Director, Greg Bisheff, at (818) 591-6472 or [email protected]. Once the coach assesses his/her skill level, swimmers will be placed into a skill-level appropriate group. Each group in the program practices between 3 – 5 times/week during the month. Practices are offered year-round and our first session begins June 3, 2019.

For more information regarding our Developmental Program, please email us: [email protected] or call us at (818) 591-6472.

There are 3 groups that comprise the development swim program.  They are as follows:

Tadpoles (3 days/week. 45 minutes/practice): To join the Tadpoles, a swimmer must be able to swim 25 yards without stopping. The primary focus is learning freestyle and backstroke and is taught through the use of drills. Additional skills such as kicking, body position, balance and “feel” for the water, and breaststroke kick are also taught.  Progress in this group will be measured on refining technique of each stroke and demonstrating consistency. Once swimmers have shown the ability to master freestyle, backstroke and the breaststroke kick they will be invited to move up to the Minnows group.

Minnows (3 days/week. 60 minutes/practice): Swimmers in the Minnows group will learn breaststroke and butterfly. Swimmers learn how the arms and legs move in both butterfly and breaststroke through the use of specific drills and learning skills. Progress in this group will be measured on refining specific skills and technique and being able to perform skills consistently. Once swimmers have shown the ability to master all 4 strokes leagally they will be invited to move up to the Sharks group.

Sharks (5 pratices/week. 60 minutes/practice): To enter the Sharks, a swimmer needs to be able to swim 50 yards of all 4 strokes legally. In this group, swimmers will continue the development of technique and skills of all 4 strokes, build endurance and focus on starts and turns for all 4 strokes and the IM.

Upon completion of the Sharks, swimmers will be invited  to try-out with the Jr Waves.

Jr. Waves (5 pratices/week. 90 minutes/practice): To enter the Jr. Waves, a swimmer needs to be able to swim 50 yards of all 4 strokes and a 100 IM legally. In this group, swimmers will continue the development of technique and skills of all 4 strokes, turns, and starts while improving conditioning and stamina specific to swimming. The emphasis is on learning intervals, drills, how to read the clock, pacing and how to be a teammate.
