 Group Swim Lesson Levels 

Level 1 - Beginner

Ratio:  1 instructor for every 4-6 students

In this level, swimmers will get an introduction to water skills.  They will learn the basics of floating on their front and back, paddling/kicking on their front and back, and putting their face in and blowing bubbles.  To move into the intermediate group a swimmer must be able to put their face in the water, float on the front and back with little to no assistance, and to paddle/kick on their front and back with little to no assistance.  With the younger ages of 4-5 it may take a few session in the beginner level before they move up to the next level.

Skills: In this level you will need to be prepared to give assistance to kids.  To move to the intermediate group you want the kids to be able to do many of these skills without assistance.

  • Entering and Exiting the pool safely
  • Putting their face in the water
  • Blowing bubbles with their mouth
  • 5 bobs
  • Front Float 5 seconds with face in the water
  • Back Float 5 seconds and recover
  • Kicking on the front for 5 m. with face in the water
  • Kicking on the back for 5 m.
  • Alternating Paddle on the front with face in the water 5 m.
  • Alternating Paddle on the back 5 m.
  • Front Glide/streamline with face in the water
  • Back glide/streamline

Level 2 - Intermediate

Ratio: 1 instructor for every 6-8 students

In this level, swimmers will review skills taught in the beginner level.  They will take the front paddle and back paddle they learned in the beginner level and refine those skills to freestyle and backstroke.  They will begin to learn the term rotary breathing/breathing to the side.  They will start to learn the basics of breaststroke.  To move onto the advanced level they will need to be able to swim freestyle with their faces in the water with some sort of breathing for half the pool and be able to swim backstroke for half the pool.

    • Front alternating paddle with face in water
    • Back alternating paddle with face in water
  • New Skills
    • 10 bobs
    • Learn breathing/breathing to the side means
    • Freestyle with streamline and breathing to middle of pool
    • Backstroke with streamline to middle of pool
    • Learn the Frog/breaststroke kick (does not have to be perfect)
    • Learn front symmetrical paddle arms with any kick (just get the breaststroke arm movement with either flutter kick or breaststroke kick)

Level 3 - Advanced Low

Ratio: 1 instructor for every 8-10 students

In this level, swimmers will refine their freestyle and backstroke.  They will put the symmetrical arms together with the frog/breaststroke kick to swim breaststroke.  They will learn the butterfly stroke that involves the symmetrical overarm movement with the dolphin kick.  They will also learn the basics of the shallow water dive and flip turns.  After this level, swimmer swill move to stroke development.  To move into stroke development you must be able to swim 25 m. of both freestyle (with site breathing) and backstroke.  You must be able to demonstrate the breaststroke and the butterfly, but not in perfect form and not for any particular distance.

    • Dolphin Kick – introduction to skill
    • Butterfly Arms – introduction to skill
    • Basics of a flip turn
    • Basics of the shallow water dive
 Level 4 - Advansed STROKE DEVELOPMENT
 
Ratio: 1 instructor for every 10 students
 

In this level, swimmers will take the time to refine the 4 major competitive strokes of Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly.  They will also take time to incorporate flips turns into freestyle and backstroke.  They will learn the 2 hand touch for butterfly and breaststroke.  During this time, they will learn the shallow water dive off of a diving platform.  To be in this level, swimmers must be able to swim 25 meters of freestyle and backstroke, and be able to demonstrate knowledge of the breaststroke and the butterfly. 

Skills

  • 50 Meters of freestyle with streamlines and flip turns
  • 50 Meters of backstroke with streamlines and flip turns
  • 25 Meters of butterfly (needs to be some what legal)
  • 25 Meters of breaststroke (needs to be some what legal)
  • Shallow water dives/starts
  • Learn the order of the Individual Medley (IM)
  • Perform a 100 IM

Level 5 - Advance High TEAM PREP

Ratio: 1 instructor for every 10 students

Swim Team Prep is a level designed for swimmers who have experience being on a swim team.  During this level, swimmers will be participating in a "swim team" practice style class.  They will be working on a lot of endurance and all stroke technique.  This is class should push kids so that they can be able to move to the competative swim team.  

Here are some requirements for swimmers before joining this class.

50 Meters of freestyle

50 Meters of backstroke

25 Meters of butterfly

25 Meters of breaststroke
