Day 2 at AA Champs
Day 2 of racing at AA champs saw many exciting swims from our team. Whether it was one of our youngest swimmers, in Kevin Ye to our eldest in Sara Lau, our athletes performed very well this evening.
Nicole Welsh began the evening with a gold medal performance in the 400 IM. Mackenzie McCord followed that up with a Silver medal in the 13-14 category. Then Mac's big sister Madison finished up the event with a Gold in the 15 & and over category.
In the 100 Backstroke, Sara Lau completed here sweep of the 15 & over backstroke events by taking gold. Alex Tsui, Nicole Welsh and Liora Gonchar also had second swims in the event as well.
Following the backstroke event was the 200 FR in which Mudi Zhao executed her raced stategy and improved her best time by 2 seconds. Sara Lau, Madison McCord and Tony Ma also competed in the finals in this event. Shortly after racing the 100 Back, Alex Tsui stepped up and won the 15 & over boys category with a time of 2:09.
In the final individual event of the evening the 100 Butterfly, our swimmers continued to race hard. Nicole Welsh, showed a lot of heart after swimming the 400 IM & 100 Bk to come from behind in the final 25 meters to earn the bronze medal. Liora Gonchar earned the Silver medal in the 15 & over girls age group. Other finalists for the girls was Jessica Jones and Christine Au-Yeung.
On the boys side, 10 year Kevin Ye swam to a fifth place finish in the 12 & under category. Kevin's time of 1:31.05 placed him 3rd all time for Rapids 10 & under boys. Kevin improved 11 seconds over the course of the day. When asked how he swam so fast he said " I ate a lot of Nutella!".
In the last event of the evening the 200 FR relay our teams showed their depth and strength once again. Our 12 & under girls won the Gold medal by 4 seconds. The team was lead by PAG 2 Mudi Zhao and RD 3 swimmers, Jessica Jones, Selina Zhou and Melissa Quon! The 15 & over girls earned the silver medal as well as our 15 & over boys that had 11 year old Tony Ma and Kevin Ye anchoring the team.
Day 3 looks to be a great day for the Rapids and are looking to be coming home with a little more hardware around their necks. For live results go to swimbc.ca
