UPDATE: Magnus makes strong showing at Speedo CAN-AM Para-Swimming Championships
12/10/10
Magnus Batara competed today in the Speedo CAN-AM Para-Swimming Championships in Toronto. The field not only included Canadians and Americans, but para-swimmers from Sweden, Brazil, and five other countries. Magnus made finals in both the 100 free and the 100 breaststroke. Magnus swam a personal best and came in sixth in the 100 free (1:10.27 LCM). Even more impressive, Magnus won the bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.53 LCM) in his first international competition.
A HUGE congratulations goes out to Magnus! With two more days of swimming to go, we're looking forward to seeing more fast swimming!
UPDATE: 12/13/10
Magnus Batara continued to swim very well for the remainder of the CAN-AMs. All totaled, Magnus had four top three finishes, 100% finals qualifying swims, and 100% best times long course (by a significant margin). Magnus also won the 50 breaststroke in his division, posting the second fastest time overall.
The real story here is Magnus's level of effort. The 200 free was Magnus's last event in finals on Sunday, after a long two and a half days of swimming. Anyone would be tired. Even after going a best time (LC) in the morning, Magnus was still able to drop six seconds in finals. His first 50 was three seconds faster than his opener in the morning, and his 100 split was only plus 2.3 seconds from his 100 free on Friday! Those of you that have done this know how much it hurts.
Upon climbing out of the pool, Magnus collapsed on deck, completely spent. We all knew he was okay when, after regaining the ability to speak, he asked for his time. Ten minutes later, he was in the warmdown tank, kicking with a smile on his face.
Congratulations to Magnus for a great meet. Here's to hoping the other Rapids take note of his amazing work ethic!
