Rapids Swim Club Host LMR Swimming Championships
February 29, 2012
The Richmond Rapids Swim Club hosted the LMR swimming championships over the weekend at Watermania Aquatics Centre. With over 400 swimmers in attendance there was lots of fierce competition in the pool.
The meet, geared as a stepping stone to provincial level competitions allows swimmers to compete at a championship level. The hope is to acquire enough racing experience to move to the provincial arena. The club had 4 new BC AA championship qualifiers. The AA standard allows swimmers to compete at the BC AA Championships in Victoria, BC this June. Rapids swimmers who advanced levels were Eunice Park (11), Isabelle Sy (15), Mark Liu (10), Dimitri Volchkov (10) and Ali Sayedain (12).
The Rapids had a great weekend with 1 new club record set by 10 year old Amanda McCallum in the 50 backstroke as well as over 75% personal best times throughout the meet. Swimmers achieving 100% Personal bests this weekend with no disqualifications were: Alyssa Azote (11), Liam Brusse (12), Anthony Chan (10), Tiger Chang (14), Adam Dobrer (12), Angela Gu (12), Michael Guo (15), Leah Hillman (11), Capri Horstmann (11), Michael Lau (12), Crystal Lui (13), Mark Liu (10), Kevin Ouyang (14), Eunice Park (11), Jerry Tao (14).
“Having 75 percent personal bests over the course of a swim meet is a great feat. Having had so many swimmers achieve 100 percent personal bests really speaks well to how the kids have bought into their own training and their coaches programs,” says Head Age Group Coach Dennis Silva. “So far the short course season’s championship meets have been very successful. Medals at Western Canadian Championships, BC AA champs in Chilliwack and now medals at the LMR champs is a nice reward for the effort and emotion invested by these kids.”
