Rapids Win LMR Champs
The final weekend before going out for Spring Break, the Richmond Rapids hosted one of their largest meets ever – LMR Short Course Championships. The meet ran over two days, with twelve-and-unders in the morning, and 13-and-overs racing in the afternoons. No heats and finals scenario here. The Rapids had to race hard on the first go, relying on solid tactics and technique to finish the season on a positive note.
Results were hugely successful, with Rapids dropping times left and right, regularly finishing in the top three spots. There were forty-nine medal-winning swims over the weekend. These efforts lead the Rapids to an overall team victory, defeating Surrey in the final session.
Equally successful, if not more so, was the work done by our amazing army of volunteers. Four hundred and seventy-two athletes passed through our lanes over the weekend, all of them well officiated, started, and times.
Not a single coach or volunteer went anything other than well and happily fed and watered. This is even more impressive, considering the meet ran for practically 12 hours straight both days – only about 15 minutes separated sessions, if that at all.
“This was seriously the best I’ve ever eaten at a meet,” says eating enthusiast and Rapids Head Assistant Coach Drew McClure.
“We had so many helpful people on deck. I can’t believe we ran that kind of volume through here so easily,” says Head Age Group Coach Dennis Silva. “We owe a huge amount to our fantastic parent volunteers – not to mention the kids that gave up their weekend to help out. Some of them didn’t even need volunteer hours.”
