The second half of our long-course season showed off big results for our regional and AA-level swimmers, as well as impressive work by all of our volunteers.
Both Rapids-hosted West Coast Open and LMR Champs were screaming successes, as some of the largest in the history of those meets. This is due in huge part to the amazing work of our volunteers, who helped us run an amazingly smooth double-ended long course WCO, and another fantastic LMR Champs.
Adding to those successes was another Rapids LMR victory for the team. This makes the Rapids LMR swimmers two-time champions in the same year! You’ll see exactly how when you look at the list of medalists at the bottom of this page.
“It’s wonderful to see strong racing at all levels of our program, and I think these victories show that we have Rapids racing hard everywhere,” said Head Coach Rob Pettifer.
In June, ten athletes traveled to Victoria to compete at AA Long Course Championships, the final meet for swimmers at that level, and the last chance to qualify for AAA Provincial Champs.
This meet was one of the most successful AAs the Rapids have had. There were dozens of second-swims throughout the three-day meet, and our athletes only seemed to get stronger as the meet progressed. The boys 14&U relay team took gold in both events, crushing the rest of the field by the final lap. The medley relay gold was won nearly eight seconds ahead of the second place team.
Other wins came with more drama. Nicholas Qu made a huge attack on the final 50 to win the 200 fly by nearly a body length, after being behind for 150 meters.
At the end of the meet, five swimmers had qualified for AAAs, four for the first time. Congratulations to Lionel Han, and our first-time AAA qualifiers, Alix Main, Allie Janowicz, Jammy Zou, and Mauricio Sorocco on their achievement.
