Coaches and Directors
Now in his fourteeth year as the Head Coach of the Mako program, and 27th year of coaching, Jason continues to strive to promote a positive team atmosphere where swimmers can learn and enjoy their time at the pool. The main objective of Jason's philosophy is to promote ongoing improvement from the developmental to the elite level swimmer.
Jason takes a great deal of satisfaction in being part the capital campaign that led to the opening of the Youth Development and Aquatic Center (YDAC) at the Greenknoll Branch. The year round facility featuring a 50m training pool that can be configured as two six lane 25yd pools to better support the Mako program is very unique to the area. The facility and the team of coaches involved with the Mako Swim Team has built the Mako Program into one of the top programs in the LSC. Under Jason's guidance numerous Mako Club records have been broken throughout all of the traditional age groups, and team representation at CT Age Groups, CT Seniors, Sectionals and Y Nationals has increased significantly. Additionally over the past eight years Jason has developed a Junior National finalist, Winter National and Junior National Qualifiers, a Y National champion and multiple Y National All -Americans, and CT resident record breakers, CT Senior Champions and finalists and was named CT Swimming's Senior Coach of the year in 2014.
Jason's background in the YMCA and USA swimming is extensive. Over the past 25 years Jason has overseen and implemented policies that produced and promoted personal success and development to swimmers of all ages and abilities. He served as the Senior Committee Chair in CT from 2016-2021 where he, with the aid of his committee, helped to foster a new outlook on Senior level swimming in the state of CT.
His dedication to the overall growth of the sport behind the scenes is equally matched by his competitive drive and intuition when it comes to the physical develpment of his swimmers. Jason has proven to be a very knowledgeable and creative coach. His coaching methods have led to numerous accomplishments at the state, regional and national level. He led his previous club to Silver Medal Status in USA Swimming's Club Recognition Program. He has worked with and developed Olympic Trial Qualifiers, US National Qualifiers, Junior National Qualifiers and Champions, US Open qualifiers, as well as numerous Sectional Championship qualifiers, a Sectional Champions, multiple YMCA National Champions and over 100 YMCA All-Americans. Jason also produced a National Age Group record holder in the boy's 15-16 LCM 100 Breaststroke in 2009.
Jason brings Open Water Swimming experience to
the Mako program as well. He has served on the USA Open Water
Swimming Committee, and works with many tri-athletes and other open
water swimmers. He has worked with two individuals that have
successfully crossed the English Channel, and led a men's team
to a National Championship in the USA Swimming 10K Open Water
Championship in 2001. Since then Jason has guided a mixed team to a
second place finish in 2003 and a men's team to a second place
finish in 2005 in the 10K event.
In addition to his time coaching at the YMCA and USA levels, Jason
also served as the Head Coach of the New Canaan High School Boys
Swim Team, where he led the NCHS Rams to six Class M State
Championships, a FCIAC championship and a State Open Championship.
He has developed numerous High School All-Americans, All-State and
All-County swimmers, and his boy's team was ranked number one in
the nation for a small public school in 2006 and 2007. Jason was
named the Boys Swimming Coach of the Year for his efforts by the
CISCA in 2005.
Jason graduated from St. Bonaventure University in 1998. While at
SBU he was a two time Atlantic 10 champion in the 200 Freestyle
Relay and an eight time finalist in the 100yd Breaststroke and
sprint Freestyle events combined. Upon graduating from SBU, Jason

and Southern Connecticut State University while earning his Masters
of Arts degree in Education with a concentration in Sport
Management from UConn. During his tenure at those Universities he
had the privilege to work with Big East champions, NCAA
Division II champions, Junior and Senior National finalists as well
as Olympic Trials qualifiers.

Lucy is in her fifth season with the Makos as the Head Age Group Coach. In her role with the Makos she is the head coach of the CTAG & Long Fins, and oversees the Mini Makos, Short Fins and Greenknoll Gators.
Prior to starting with the Makos, Lucy was the Head Coach of the Panther Aquatic Club. In her 14 years in that role she developed a great understanding and appreciation for how focus on strong foundational skills, in a fun and enjoyable environment, enables swimmers to find great success as they progress through their career.
In her time at PAC, Lucy worked with swimmers at every level producing CT Age Group, CT Senior, Zones, Sectionals, Futures and Senior National qualifiers. Her efforts helped grow the PAC team from a Park and Rec program to a USA Swimming Club with over 150 swimmers. Her commitment to the development of her swimmers and her team demonstrates her ability to keep swimmers and families engaged in the program. This dedication is what makes her a great fit for the Mako Swim Team and the ideal candidate for the Head Developmental Age Group Coach position.
Not only does Lucy bring over a decade of coaching experience with her, she has an extensive career as an athlete that began in her early childhood. She swam competitively as a Wilton Y Wahoo for 12 years, and for four years at Pomperaug High School. After high school she represented Denison University as a Varsity Athlete while earning her degrees in English and Communications.
In addition to her dedication to the sport as a coach and athlete, Lucy is familiar with our program and a lot of our swimmers all ready. She joined us in fall 2019 as our Masters Swim coach, and then took on an assisting role with several of our Mako squads in fall 2020 during the COVID chaos.
Lucy resides in Southbury with her husband and four children. She can be reached via email and is happy to set up appointments for meetings.
Karen Roth has been coaching swimming for more years than she would like to admit. She started her coaching career in Dover, NH at the Seacoast Swimming Association under the tutelage of head coaches Mike and Amy Parratto, where future Olympian Jenny Thompson was swimming. She also coached Jenny and the rest of the Dover High School co-ed swim team. She feels incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach and learn from such an elite coaching staff for over six years.
After coaching in NH, she moved to Adrian, MI for three years. While there, she coached with the Lenawee County YMCA, Adrian High School girls team and was head coach at Adrian College a small liberal arts college in the MIAA.
Following her three years in Michigan, she returned to Connecticut and started coaching with the Wilton YMCA under head coach Tim Murphy (current head coach of Penn State’s Women’s and Men’s team). She coached with Wilton over nineteen years and under three different head coaches. During her tenure there, she coached with the National team as well as helped with all levels of the program, including Master’s. She was able to coach several Olympic Trial Qualifiers, Y-National winners and several teams that were top three at Y-Nationals. She also coached the Wilton High School Girls Swim Team, and lead them to a second place finish at the Connecticut State Opens. She backed away from coaching the High School team after the birth of her first daughter.
She graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BA in psychology. Following that, she received her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Antioch New England Graduate School in Keene, NH.
Coach Karen will be assisting with the National and Regional groups this season.
Eileen has been coaching with us here in Brookfield since September of 2020 as a lead coach of the State and Regional squads.
Eileen competed in college at North Central Illinois and has coached the Joel Barlow High School team for the last 25 years. She has developed state champions at the class levels in Connecticut and has worked with All American level swimmers. Her experience as a swimmer and as a coach over the years has helped her develop a strong understanding of how to swim fast, stay motivated and succeed in and out of the pool.
Prior to this new role for Eileen, she was the Director of Parks and Recreation in Bethel for 37 years, where she oversaw many programs and projects. Her previous experiences make her a perfect fit for this new role with our team.
Anna is a lifelong Mako, she is a team record holder, and a YMCA National qualifier! Anna has great energy and brings her swimming expertise to the pool everyday!
Anna assists with the Short Fins, Long Fins, Junior, and CTAG squads.
