Tom Avila Head Coach

Coach Tom founded Gator Swim Club of Western Massachusetts in 2022, after nearly 30 years of competitive swimming experience in the Commonwealth. Growing up in a swimming family from Andover, Tom swam for the Andover/North Andover YMCA Hurricanes and later captained the Andover High School Swim & Dive team. Tom began his coaching career with Gator Swim Club's parent branch in Waltham, MA, where he coached for nearly 8 years. He then spent 2 years as the Head Coach of MetroWest Aquatic Club in Waltham, Massachusetts and, most recently, 2 years at Bluefish Swim Club.

Swimmers coached by Tom have reached some of the highest levels in the sport, including numerous New England record holders, NCSA Junior National record-breakers and top-3 finishers, National Age Group Top-16 performers, Olympic Trials finalists, and even a competitor at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Clubs coached by Coach Tom have achieved both USA Swimming Gold Medal and Podium Club status, ranking them among the best in the nation. Most importantly, student-athletes coached by Tom have not lost their love of the sport and have gone on to swim at prestigious universities and powerful collegiate swim programs such as, Stanford, the University of Florida, and the University of Southern California, as well as every single Ivy League insitutution.

In addition to USA Swimming, Tom also has experience coaching at the college level. In 2022, he took over a Westfield State program on the verge of shutting down, leading them to their best finish at Little East Championships in program history.

Tom attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, and graduated in 2010 with a BS in Justice & Social Inquiry. He lives in Southampton with his partner Hazel, a scientist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, as well as their 2 dogs and 2 cats.
