The Western Mass Aquadogs

Coaching Staff
Tom Avila Head Coach

Coach Tom founded the Aquadogs, originally Gator Swim Club of Western Mass, in 2022 after nearly 30 years of swimming experience in the Commonwealth. As swimmer, he competed for the Andover/North Andover YMCA Hurricanes, setting numerous team records, and later captained the Andover High Swim & Dive Team. He began coaching in 2010, first with Gator Swim Club, then MetroWest Aquatic Club, and later Bluefish Swim Club.

Swimmers coached by Tom have reached some of the highest levels in the sport, including numerous New England Swimming records, NCSA Junior National records, USA Swimming Junior National Championships, Olympic Trials Finals, and even the Olympic Games. Age group programs directed by Tom have been named to the ASCA Top 20 numerous times, and clubs coached by Tom have achieved both USA Swimming Gold Medal and Podium Club status, ranking them among the best in the nation.

Most importantly, student-athletes coached by Tom have not lost their love of the sport and have gone on to swim at prestigious universities and powerful collegiate swim programs such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Florida, and USC.

In addition to USA Swimming, Tom also has experience coaching at the college level. In 2022, he took over the Westfield State Women's Swim & Dive team, which was on the verge of being shut down. He immediately turned around the struggling program, leading them to their best finish at Little East Championships in school history.

Tom attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, and graduated in 2010 with a BS in Justice & Social Inquiry. He lives in Southampton with his partner Hazel, a biologist with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, as well as their 2 dogs and 3 cats.
