#TuesdayTip 12/10 - Cooling Down
December 10th, 2019
Cooling down appropriately is an often overlooked, but crucial component of managing a meet with multiple events. Most swimmers tend to cut it short. Let's face it - easy swimming isn't really the most exciting part of a meet. Between the actual racing, and the opportunity to hang around with your friends for a few hours, cooling down can feel like a useless exercise meant only to keep you from the things you'd rather be doing. BUT...there's actually a good reason for it. Cooling down after your race will DRASTICALLY reduce the amount of time it takes for you to recover from that race. That may not be important if it's your last race of a long weekend and you've got nothing going on the next day, but it is SUPER important if you have 2-3 more races to swim in the next 2-3 hours. A properly executed cool down can definitely be the difference between having really competitive 3rd & 4th events, or falling behind your competition because you haven't fully recovered.
