Coach Kevin returned to Stevenson in August 2015. A 2000 SHS graduate, he went on to study Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (2000–2001) and the University of Wisconsin–Madison (2001–2004). Kevin was a four-time varsity letter winner (one at Nebraska, three at Wisconsin). While at UW–Madison, he earned three NCAA All-America honors and swam the breaststroke leg on the 200 Medley Relay that placed fourth at the 2004 NCAA Championships.
In 2006, following the passing of a close friend, Kevin came out of retirement and qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. That same year, he helped co-found the Christopher Steele Foundation, where he served as President beginning in 2010. Over a decade, the foundation donated more than $100,000 to the Northwestern Memorial Foundation for sarcoma research, as well as provided scholarships supporting SHS hockey and baseball athletes.
After the 2008 Olympic Trials, Kevin began his coaching career as Assistant Head Coach at CATS Aquatic Team (2008–2012). He later joined Northwestern as Head Senior Coach of NASA-Wild and also volunteered with the Northwestern Women’s Varsity Swim Program (2012–2015).
Since 2022, Kevin has served as Senior Vice Chair for Illinois Swimming, where he works alongside the Board of Directors to strengthen the competitive swimming community across the state. In this role, he has helped develop initiatives to enhance athlete and coach education, improve meet operations, and expand collaboration between USA Swimming and high school officials. Projects like the Senior Quad Challenge, Athlete Leadership opportunities, and also Project LA.
Kevin is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and holds a Level 4 certification from the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA)
Thomas Schwingen has been involved with swimming as both a competitive swimmer and coach for most his life. He started swimming competitively at the age of 5 and continued through the age of 20 for UIC. His highest accolade was qualifying and swimming the Toyota US Open in 2000. After college he coached for 2 years at the Oak Brook Stars swim team. Then went on to a ‘normal’ daily job for 7 years but wasn’t really enjoying it. So, he came back to coaching in 2011, first at PAC for 2 years, then Ultimate Swimming for 2 and back to PAC in 2015. Thomas has coached multiple Regional, State and Zone qualifiers and Champions throughout his career. He is very passionate about swimming and being able to give his swimmers all the knowledge and tools needed to be the best swimmers they can be.
