Boys swimming | State preview: Kaneland's Grant Alef going solo BOYS SWIMMING February 24, 2011|By Mike Helfgot | Special to the Tribune Kaneland High School does not have a swimming pool. "There's a pond," Grant Alef deadpanned, referencing an oft-quoted "Caddyshack" line. "There really is. It's not good, though. Too cold." No pool means no team. Fortunately for Alef, it doesn't mean no season. A top club swimmer and multiple YMCA national champion who has been in pools — and occasionally ponds — year-round since he was 5 years old,...

Marmion just misses sectional title When looked at from any angle, there really wasn't anything wrong with Marmion's performance at Saturday's St. Charles East boys swimming sectional. Despite not having any diving entries, the Cadets only finished second by 1 point to Wheaton Warrenville South. Marmion takes a solid contingent of 3 relays and 6 individual entries to next week's state meet at Evanston. But the Cadets could also point to a string of cases where a terrific time drop brought a swimmer just to the brink of qualification and...

DeDina, Haseman qualify for state With his purple cap bobbing up and down in the water, it wasn’t too hard to miss Hampshire’s lone swimmer in Saturday’s IHSA St. Charles North sectional as he competed in the 100-yard breaststroke. It was even harder to miss Josh DeDina when he stepped onto the Lane 4 starting block after that race, a representation of his fourth-place finish in the heats that qualify swimmers for next week’s state meet at New Trier. DeDina’s time in the race was 1:01.28, good enough to send...

Sectional effort thrills St. Charles North When teams get to the state swim meet, where seating is limited, they all try to stake out their favored places on the pool-deck bleachers. St. Charles North, for example, likes to stand on the right side of the deck, when facing the scoreboard. And the North Stars are going to need to make sure they have a little extra space on those bleachers next weekend to accommodate the massive number of qualifiers the team garnered at Saturday’s St. Charles North sectional. The North...
