EMILY CARAS SNYDER SCHOLARSHIP

Emily Caras Snyder passed away unexpectedly on September 17, 2020 at the age of 33. The Caras family, along with Maine Swimming, would like to honor Emily's memory with a scholarship in her name.

The award will be given to an MESI senior swimmer who is “dedicated to the sport, and whose approach to swimming is characterized by hard work, humility, and a positive attitude".  Those who knew and worked with Emily described her in the following ways: kind, thoughtful, inspirational, empathetic, cheerful, well-liked, role model, embodiment of hard work, compassionate, heart of gold, resilient through many ups and downs, and commanded respect just by being her.

AWARD : The $4000.00 award will be divided equally over 4 years and sent directly to the college (in the student’s name) at the beginning of the second semester of each college year. The student receiving the award must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 through four years of undergraduate studies and continue to swim through 4 years (extenuating circumstances may be requested).

CRITERIA:

1.     Applicant must be an active member of Maine Swimming, Inc in good standing.

2.     Applicant must be a graduating high school senior in the year of the award.

3.     Applicant must be planning on swimming in college.

APPLICATION PROCESS:  

1.       Completed application form, submit online.

2.      Upload a short essay (500 words) that should focus on how the applicant has exemplified the characteristics described above and has been impactful to their community, team and Maine Swimming (MESI).

3.  Two recommendations (a coach, peer or other mentor/educator/supervisor) are required.

 

Applications should be sumbitted HERE by May 31, 2024. Applications received after this date will not be considered. 

The winner will be announced at the 2024 luncheon at Colby College on July 13th.  

 

IMPACT AWARD

PURPOSE: To provide an award for the Maine Swimming athlete having a distinguishable impact on their team, community and sport.

AWARD: One (1) $1,000 award and individual certificate awarded to a student selected by the Impact Award Selection Committee.

CRITERIA:

  1. Applicant must be a current member of Maine Swimming, Inc.
  2. Applicant must have been a registered Maine Swimming athlete for a minimum of one year.
  3. Applicant must be at least 16 years old or entering their Sophomore year of high school.

APPLICATION PROCESS:  

  1. Completed application form submitted online.
  2. Submit an essay (500 words or less) or a video (2 minutes or less)
  3. Submit an impact statement provided by anyone having knowledge to
    speak on their behalf.

SELECTION CRITERIA: The Selection Committee shall evaluate applicants based upon the following criteria:

1. Number of years involved/member in Maine Swimming
2. Involvement with Maine Swimming (Board, Athlete Rep, Committee or other activities)
3. Volunteerism outside of swimming
4. What has the nominee done to promote the sport of swimming in their
community? 
5. How does the nominee raise the level of commitment and motivation
of their teammates?

Deadline for application is May 31, 2024. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

The Selection Committee shall select 3 finalists for the award. The Selection Committee will arrange interviews on Zoom with each finalist and either the person who made the impact statement on their behalf or their respective coach. The winner will be announced at the luncheon at Colby College on July 13th.
