MINOR ATHLETE ABUSE PROTECTION POLICY (MAAPP)

  • The MAAPP addresses one-on-one interactions, social media and electronic communications, travel, locker rooms and changing areas and massages, rubdowns and athletic training modalities. Every USA Swimming club, Zone and LSC is required to implement the MAAPP in full. HERE is MESI’s MAAPP policy.
  • Each club MUST adopt the MAAPP policy (only customizing the club name), post it to their dedicated Safe Sport page and have all members and coaches acknowledge they that have read it. Most clubs have found that it’s easiest to do this during their registration process.

ONLINE TRAINING:

  • Here are step-by-step instructions on how to access online APT courses.
  • Annual Athlete Protection Training (APT) is required for athletes 18 years and older. This is universally enforced at all sanctioned and approved USA meets. The training course must be taken each year and can be accessed HERE.
  • To become Safe Sport certified or re-certified, a minimum of 10% of the club’s athletes AND parents will need to take APT training. They can take the course on their own HERE OR you can hold a group session with your club’s Head Coach and Safe Sport Coordinator. At this group session, play the APT course, answer any questions your athletes may have and take attendance (have each athlete print and sign their name). This list can then be sent to USA Swimming and you get credit for holding the athlete training. Email [email protected] with any questions.
  • Every coach and member of a club’s board of directors, must also take the refresher course annually. Go to the USAS website and once logged in, follow the steps and click on the training called Parent’s Guide to Misconduct in Sport.

USA Swimming Safe Sport Club Toolkit:

  • To start the Safe Sport Recognition Program (SSRP) process, you need to log into your Club Portal. Instructions can be found HERE.
  • Safe Sport requires that all USA Swimming member clubs have certain policies in place and they must be reviewed and agreed upon on an annual basis. The Safe Sport toolkit has templates, policy examples and best practices to help you get started. You can also reach out to the MESI Safe Sport Chair with any questions at [email protected].
  • Visit the MESI Clubs page for a list of Maine teams that are Safe Sport recognized. Clubs receive $250 each time they complete their certification (every 2 years).
