Learn-to-Swim Groups

The Cape Cod Swim Club organizes its Learn-to-Swim program into 4 levels (Flounder, Mackerel, Cod, Blue) once swimmers are age 6 & older. Preschool classes for children in kindergarten and younger are organized by age. Level changes are made only at the beginning of a new session. Sessions begin in September, January, April and July. Swim meets are held for LTS swimmers in Flounder and above in June and December. These meets are designed to introduce younger swimmers to competition in a low-stress manner. Each group competes in events that reflect the skills taught during lessons. In addition, swimmers in Blue may be invited to participate in competitive swim meets held by the CCSC. This provides an opportunity for swimmers and families to experience competitive swimming before making the commitment to join the swim team.

Kindergarten Flounder

Swimmers begin learning freestyle and backstroke in a class of only 4 swimmers.  This level meets for 30 minutes once per week.

To progress to Flounder, swimmers must be comfortable in the water and have the stamina for an hour lesson.  This includes the ability to wait and listen to directions in a larger group setting.

Flounder

In Flounder, swimmers will work on breath control, side breathing, body position, streamline, straight arm windmills, rolling from back to stomach, and sitting dives.

In order to progress to Mackerel, swimmers must be able to complete 1 lap of freestyle.

Mackerel

In Mackerel, swimmers will work to improve side breathing, streamlining and stamina. They will be introduced to alternate breathing, somersaults, flip turns, standing dives, and breaststroke.

In order to progress to Cod, swimmers must be able to complete 2 laps of freestyle with alternate breathing and flip turns, 2 laps of backstroke with flip turns, and 1 lap of breaststroke .

Cod

In Cod, swimmers will continue to develop their freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. Butterfly will be introduced. They will begin diving from the blocks and using the pace clock.

In order to progress to Blue, swimmers must be able to complete 3 laps of freestyle with alternate breathing and flip turns, 3 laps of backstroke with flip turns, and 2 laps of breaststroke with pullouts. They must also be able to dive from the side of the pool.

Blue

In Blue, swimmers continue to hone their skills in each of the four strokes and diving. They continue to work with the pace clock and learn how to read a workout.

To be ready for competitive swimming, swimmers must be able to complete 4 laps of freestyle with alternate breathing and flip turns, 4 laps of backstroke with flip turns, 4 laps of breaststroke with two-hand touches and pullouts, and 1 lap of butterfly. Swimmers must be able to dive from the blocks.

Pre-School Program:

Parent/Child classes  are designed as a fun way to acclimate your little swimmer (9 months-3 years) to the water.

Classes for 3 & 4 year olds are also offered as part of the preschool program.  These classes teach children to swim underwater and above water when ready.  Flotation belts are used.
