Special Olympics Swim Team

The mission of Taos Swim Club Special Olympics Team is to provide training and summer competition in swimming for people with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

The ultimate objective of Taos Swim Club Special Olympics Team is to help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through the sport of swimming, and by increasing the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs.

Practices are offered free of charge.  We fundraise for out-of-town competitions.

Our Special Olympics swim team will practice on Fridays from 4:00 - 5:00 pm starting June 2, 2025 through August 15. An optional practice may be added.

Volunteer Opportunity Request

We are looking for 8-10 volunteers knowing that not everyone can come on every Friday. Special Olympics swimming includes training, team building, and two competitions. There are competitive events for ALL abilities including an in-water walking race, assisted swims, all the way up to "typical" races and relays. Our two competition opportunities for the athletes are July 20, 2025 in Los Alamos and the big event with 3 sports (swimming, softball, and golf) in Farmington, August 22-23, 2025.
