How long is the swim season?

  • There are 2 seasons a year. The Short Course Yards (scy) run from approximately September to February. Long Course runs from approximately March to August.
  • JTSC is a year-round program. We anticipate and encourage your swimmer to swim both Short and Long Course seasons.
  • There are breaks for Christmas, Spring Break, and 2 weeks between each season.

What is the difference between long course and short course?

  • Short course season practice starts in mid-August and runs until March. It is called short course because the events are usually held in a 25-YARD pool, though some short course pools may be 25-METERS. Short course events are almost always held indoors. High School and College meets are held in a short course format.
  • Long course season practice starts in the spring and runs through the summer. It is called long course because the events are held in a 50-METER pool. 50 meters is the Olympic length and is about 16 feet longer than 50 yards. Many long course meets are held in outdoor pools.

When are tryouts, and how do they work?

  • Tryouts are held twice a year before each season.
  • At a tryout a swimmer will be asked to swim a distance (typically 25 yards) in each stroke; freestyle, breast, butterfly, and back.
  • The coaches will evaluate the swimmer and provide guidance as to the next steps; placement in a club practice group or development in another aquatic program.
  • There is no cost to tryout and the first week of club practice is free.

How can I tell which practice group my swimmer belongs in?

The coaches will communicate the appropriate group for your swimmer. Within each group, there may be additional subgroups for practice so that swimmers will be with others of similar abilities. Grouping is determined by age and a set of progressive standards, taking into consideration social and emotional development as well as ability. Your swimmer will have the opportunity to move into a more advanced group as their skill and endurance increase. JTSC is a technique-based program. Once your swimmer has mastered a skill level, the coaches will not hesitate to advance the swimmer.

What if my swimmer wants to attend more (or less) than the recommended practice?

  • The recommended number of practices per week is based on the swimmer-to-coach ratio, ability, individual growth, and the age-appropriate recommendation by USA Swimming.
  • We understand that swimming is just one part of each athlete's life and that each athlete will not attend every practice, every week. We will continue to encourage the above practice frequencies, but families are free to make adjustments due to other sports or programs, illnesses, family plans, etc. Remember to keep your coach in the loop!

Is the swim club part of Jenks Public School?

  • The swim club is a Jenks Community Education program that is part of Jenks Public Schools.
  • The Aquatic Center facility is operated by Jenks Public Schools.
  • Daily operations are managed by the Club Program Director/Head Swim Coach. A volunteer parent advisory committee helps plan and coordinate activities.
  • Swimmers do not have to attend or live within the Jenks Public Schools boundaries to participate.
  • The swim club is separate from Jenks High School Varsity Swimming and is not an OSSAA (Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association) sport.

What do my tuition and fees pay for?

  • Your tuition helps pay for many different things; coaches' salaries, staffing, website usage, equipment, and team events, just to name a few.
  • The USA Swimming registration fee pays for your swimmer’s membership to USA Swimming.
  • The Club/Pool fee helps offset the cost of running the state-of-the-art Jenks Trojan Aquatic Center.
  • Meet fees pay for entry and participation in a swim meet which covers the cost of lifeguards, facilities, hospitality, awards, etc. for a swim meet.

What sort of equipment will my swimmer need?

  • For practice, your swimmer will need a suit, goggles, and a swim cap. We suggest a swim bag to carry clothes, towels, and a water bottle.
  • Female swimmers should wear a one-piece suit. Male swimmers should wear briefs or jammers.
  • Once they are in the Advanced group and above, they will need fins, kick board, and buoys. Most swimmers find it easier to carry these items in a mesh bag.
  • For swim meets we do ask that all swimmers wear the JTSC team swimsuit.
  • Gear for meets and practices can be found online here and is available at the Trojan Head pop-up shop in the Aquatic Center lobby which is open during most practices.

What are the volunteer requirements?

  • Each family is required to volunteer at least 20 hours for Short Course and 15 hours for Long Course. That equates to 30 total hours for the year.
  • We offer many opportunities throughout the season to accomplish this. Volunteering can be anything from working at the meets on a weekend, staffing the Trojan Head during weekday practices, helping with planning the banquets, donating food and beverages for upcoming meets, etc.
  • Volunteer hours can be served by mom, dad, brother, sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.
  • Unfilled volunteer hours are billed at $40/hour at the end of each season.

How do I get communication about JTSC, meets, and events?

Information on club activities, meets and practice times can be found on this website. Club information is also weekly sent out via email, and on a closed Facebook group, so make sure your email address is on file. In addition, feel free to check the pool lobby for information on the posters and whiteboards.  Parent meetings are held in September or October, then again in February or March.
