Evan Stiles AAC Head Coach

Evan has been with the Arlington Aquatic Club since 1993. He spent the first 12 years as a Head Age Group coach and the Head Masters coach. In 2005, Evan took over as the Head Coach.

Evan grew up in Alexandria, VA, where he attended Mt. Vernon High School and graduated in 1987. He went on to get a BA in Geography in 1991 from Mary Washington College and then a MSS in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, AL in 1993.

Evan has also been a Varsity high school coach for the past 26 years. He spent 22 years at O'Connell and the past 4 years at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School. During the summers, Evan coaches in the NVSL, the past 17 years at Dowden Terrace. Evan currently is the Virginia Independent Schools (VISAA) Swimming President. He has also spent the past 3 years as the Potomac Valley Swimming (PVS) Coaches Rep and is about to begin the new role of PVS Senior Chair.

Bethany Banal AAC Assistant Head Coach

Bethany grew up swimming for Southern Crescent Aquatic Team in Georgia. She attended college Studying Marine Biology at the University of West Florida. She coached at North Baltimore Aquatic Club for 8 years as a lead coach. She was the head coach for the Baltimore City Special Olympics Swim Team for 3 years. After moving to Alexandria in 2014 she has spent her summers as the head coach of Belle Haven Country Club’s Swim Team.

She has been coaching with Arlington Aquatic Club since 2014. She has worked with the Mini Gators on up through the Senior level. She is the Assistant Head Coach.

Julie Gallion Lead Coach

Julie began swimming at the Warren, PA YMCA at the age of 10 and continued swimming for Warren Area High School as a teenager.  Julie graduated from Slippery Rock Univeristy with a degree in Env. Studies and a minor in Cartography and she competed on the swim team. After graduating, she continued her love for swimming with the DC and the Arlington Masters teams for the past 20+ years.

She joined the coaching staff at AAC in 2009 and has taught many of the Arlington Aquatic Club young swimmers the four strokes as they began their careers on the Mini Gators and Mega Gators teams and is currently one of the lead coaches for the AG and AG Performance groups and assists with AGP.

Kevin Nicholson Lead Coach
 

Hi!   My name is Kevin Nicholson and this is my second year coaching at AAC.   I currently coach Age Group, Age Group Plus, and Age Group Performance, and have helped with Gators practices.   I’m from Ithaca, NY and swam for club, summer, and school swim teams from the age of six through my senior year of high school.   I went on to swim for the men’s swim team at Gettysburg College between 2011 and 2015.   After graduating I served as an assistant coach for the boys and girls varsity swimming and diving teams at Ithaca High School for one year, taught history and social studies for two years at the Whitestone Academy in upstate NY and then moved to Arlington in 2018 to get my Master’s degree in history at George Washington University.   I joined AAC in September of 2018 and have really enjoyed my time here since!

Gypsy Roberts Assistant coach

Gypsy began swimming at the age of four with the Parklawn Piranhas. She got her start with year-round swimming a couple of years later with AAC and then Nations Capital, formerly Curl Burke. She was a member of the Bishop O’Connell High School swim team her freshman and sophomore years, and after transferring to start her junior year, swam for Justice High School.

While in college, Gypsy spent her summers working as a lifeguard and swim instructor for young swimmers of varying ages and abilities. She completed her undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech, has a graduate degree in clinical psychology, and currently works for local government. Gypsy joined the AAC coaching staff in 2013, and has been a lead coach for Age Group Prep.

Courtney Horwat Lead Coach

Coach Courtney grew up in Springfield, Virgina and began swimming for the Saratoga Stingrays in the Colonial Swim League at age 6. She continued swimming for Lee HS (Now Lewis) Lancers through high school. Her favorite stroke is Breastroke and has a passion for helping swimmers grow in thier stroke technique. 

She began her coaching carreer in 2018 as an assistant coach for Alexandria City High School and since 2019 spends her summer season Courtney assists Coach Bethany at Belle Haven Country Club.

Coach Courtney came to AAC in 2021 and loves coaching Mini-Gators
