Otter Pups Program

Dana Hills Otter Pups

Otter Pups is our introductory learn-to-swim team program, designed to help young swimmers build confidence, learn foundational skills, and progress toward joining the Dana Hills Swim Team.

The goal for every participant is to advance to the swim team when they are ready, moving up to the next practice group as skills develop so they can grow confidence and continue learning in the pool.

Otter Pups introduces swimmers to pool safety, swim team terminology, and foundational stroke technique in freestyle and backstroke. Swimmers are grouped by experience and skill level to ensure a positive and supportive learning environment.

More advanced swimmers may have the opportunity to move into the 6 & Under swim team group at the discretion of the coaching staff.

Supported by Coaches + Youth Mentors

A fun, positive introduction to swim team culture.

Otter Pups swimmers are supported not only by our coaching staff, but also by older Dana Hills youth swimmers who volunteer to assist with this program. These mentors are excited to pass on what they’ve learned, encourage younger swimmers, and help create a welcoming environment.

This program is meant to spread the joy of swim team and offer a friendly introduction to swim team for swimmers and families alike.

Progress & Advancement

How swimmers grow and move forward.

All swimmers progress at their own speed. A parent’s role is to encourage and support your young swimmer. Young swimmers often grow best when they feel in control while steadily being encouraged to try new skills.

Swimmers may use a progress checklist to track skill development. Once skills are consistently demonstrated and at the discretion of the coaching staff, swimmers may be invited to transition into the swim team.

Before Practice

How to help your swimmer be prepared and successful.

  • Have your child eat a light snack 20–30 minutes before practice
  • Apply sunscreen 15–20 minutes before practice
  • Wear a snug-fitting competition swimsuit (no swim shirts or board shorts)
  • Bring goggles fitted before practice and a spare pair
  • Swimmers with long hair should wear a cap (bring an extra)
  • Bring a towel and dry clothes for after practice
  • If your swimmer has had a fever in the past 24 hours or an illness that may be contagious, please keep them home

Parent Seating & Practice Etiquette

Helping swimmers stay focused and safe.

Safety is our priority. Learning to swim, follow instructions, and practice active listening takes a swimmer’s full attention. To allow coaches to have your swimmer’s full attention, we ask parents to sit away from the practice area and avoid distracting swimmers or coaches during practice.

Otter Pups Parent Volunteer Requirement

Dana Hills Swim Team is a volunteer-run organization. Families participating in Otter Pups are asked to help support our team’s largest fundraising event, the Devil Mountain Pentathlon, held annually in June at Dana Hills.

Questions or Concerns?

If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to the coach before or after practice. For safety and focus, please don’t interrupt coaches during practice.
