Swim Team History
The Campus Cabana Swim Team was started in 1962, two years after the pool opened. The "Seahorses" as they are called, are part of the Free State Swim League, which was founded in 1961. When the team started the pool lifeguards were the coaches. Also, the youngest age group at the time was 8 and under, while the oldest age you where you could compete was 16. Compared to today, where the youngest age group is 6 and under and the oldest age you can compete at is 18.
In 2005, the annual Pat Brugh Crab feast was started as a fundraiser for the swim team, which was was held the Monday night of the trophy meet. When the trophy meet was moved to a Saturday, the crab feast continued to be on the Monday after the trophy meet. Pat Brugh swam for Campus growing up and was a coach for 6 years. He currently is a member at Campus Cabana will his family.
In 1989/90, Ann Linz And Linda Weber started giving swim lessons to kids, which was the predecessor of the Jr. Seahorse program.
In 2008, the Junior Seahorse program was started by Darcy Zink, who saw an opportunity for younger kids of swim team families who were already at practiced in the morning, but not quite ready to be on the team. The goal of the program is to get younger kids comfortable in the water and to teach them to how to swim and to give them the skills to be successful on the swim team. Many of our current swimmers on the swim team have gone through the Junior Seahorse program.
In 2010, the Annual 24 hour relay was started by Ian Brook as a team bonding experience which also raises money for the swim team and a local charity. The relay normally starts at 9am on Friday and ends on 9am on Saturday. Swimmers and their families spent the night "camping out" at the pool. The relay has changed over the years. It now involves a 12 hour relay where swimmers swim a continuous relay for 12 hours.
