New and Returning Officials/Stroke and Turn Training Dates Announced

Official Certification

There are several ways to certify MHSL officials in 2022 :

1 - USA Swimming Reciprocity

If you have USA swimming credentials at any official position, you earn that authority in MHSL. Please direct your officials to send the League Head Official ( [email protected]) with your team, name and USA Swimming credentials. The League Official will reply with confirmation and a one page handout documenting the differences between USA Swimming and MHSL.

2 - MHSL Recertification - Virtual Training

If you've been an official with MHSL for 2 (or more) years, you may attend Zoom training.  You must arrive within 10 minutes of the start time. Training lasts one hour and you will be provided a test at the end of the Zoom session.  You can complete the test at the end of the Zoom call (as time permits) or take it as an open book test (at your leisure) and send back answers to the League Head Official.  Either way, you must submit a test to be added to the certified roster. The League Head Official will reply with confirmation and a one page handout documenting the differences between USA Swimming and MHSL.

4 - MHSL Training - in person

If you are relatively new to MHSL (1 year or less) and don't have USA swimming reciprocity, the League Head Official requires attendance at an MHSL training session (or the  strokeandturn.com option below) to be certified for MHSL S&T.  New stroke and turn officials may sign up for virtual training.  Likewise, if an official is looking to advance from Stroke and Turn to Starter and/or Referee, the League Head Official highly recommends attending in person (vs virtual) training.

5  - strokeandturn.com (e-learning)

If an official or team wants to pay (out of their own pocket) to certify via the online eLearning and training site:  https://www.strokeandturn.com/ that is acceptable.  MHSL will  NOT  reimburse this form of training but does accept it as valid training.  A certificate of completion will grant you Stroke & Turn authority only. They will be required to email the League Head Official ( [email protected]) with that certificate .  The Head Official ill reply with confirmation and a one page handout documenting the differences between USA Swimming and MHSL.

Official Positions Needed

Every team must have a  minimum  of the following MHSL certified officials:
  • 3 Deck Referee/Starter (4 or more suggested)
  • 4 Stroke and Turn Officials (5 or more suggested)
In a dual meet, it is expected that each visiting team will provide 2 stroke and turn officials.  Speaking from experience, it is nice when you have more than 4 total stroke and turn officials so that you can give your officials a break!  Likewise, having three individuals to function as a meet referee, deck referee and a starter is ideal.  If you ask officials to cover too much for too long, it will impact the quality of your meet.  Likewise, as a summer league, please keep in mind that folks will travel or be on vacation during certain weeks.

Official Training Sessions

Here are the training dates and times that will be provided by MHSL.  Due to room capacity (in some venues), I am suggesting 20 people per session but the League Head Official can look to open some sessions to a larger audience (as needed).  Obviously, Zoom sessions can be increased in capacity.  However, the Head Official is requesting an RSVP.  Please have sign up at:

NOTE: Officials are encouraged to RSVP but are still welcome to drop in.  However, sessions (virtual or in person) with no RSVPs 24 hours prior to their scheduled start time  will be cancelled.
