Meet Information: MSL Dual Meet Season Week Two

Strawberry Seals @ Terra Linda Orcas – Saturday, May 04, 2024

Tomorrow the Seals will travel to sunny Terra Linda to compete with our friends, the Terra Linda Orcas. The Orcas have a fantastic eight lane pool with overflow gutters which make the water smooth and fast to swim in.

It will be a very exciting meet as the Seals and Orcas are well-matched. When there is parity in competition, the more motivated team prevails. To compete with a very strong ORCA team, our Seals will need to bring their best efforts to every race.

Swimming in the Rain? Yes, We Do!

Swimmmers are a hardy bunch, so meets will be held rain or shine.

Bring canopies and weather resistant clothes as rain is forecasted for the first few hours of the meet. Extra towels and spare dry clothing will also be helpful. Staying warm and dry during the meet will keep our swimmers warm, happy, and ready to swim fast. Also, if your swimmer is expending energy to stay warm, they will have less energy for their races so staying warm in between races will improve performance.

If all goes smoothly, the meet will be done by noon.

Location: Terra Linda Community Center Pool, 670 Del Ganado Rd, San Rafael, 94903

Parking at the community center is very limited. Please arrive early as street parking near the Community Center will fill early.

Please do not park at the adjacent shopping center as the lot is for customers at the shopping center. If you park there, your car may be towed.

For Swimmers - Spirit of the Sport:

Swim meets provide an opportunity for young athletes to learn the value of the sporting spirit. It is important for swimmers to give their best effort in every race, to support their teammates, and treat our competitors with kindness and respect. When a swimmer is friendly to the members of the other team it reflects positively on our team and community.

After each race our swimmers should congratulate their opponents and thank them for providing the opportunity to race. Both teams attend the meet for the same purpose, to create a fun and positive experience for our swimmers to grow as athletes and individuals.

For Parents and Guardians – A Parent’s Role at Competitions

A guardian’s role at a swim meet is simple but done properly is extremely rewarding.

 A guardian should:

  • Help ensure swimmers do not miss races.
  • Help swimmers stay properly hydrated and nourished throughout the day.
  • Make swimmers feel loved and appreciated after each race.
  • And use one very powerful phrase after every race, “I love to watch you swim.”  It will make your swimmer feel great and will strengthen the bond between you and your child. I recommend this fantastic essay, “6 Words You Should Say Today”.

A guardian should not:

  • Coach their swimmer at the meets.
  • Coach other people’s children at the meets.

Pre-Meet Team Warm Up

The warmup is the first team-based activity we do at a meet, and it sets the “great teams do great things together” tone for the entire day.

To minimize crowding in the pool, the warmup will be organized by age groups.

Team Meeting: 8:25 AM at Shallow End of Pool

After the team warm up is complete we will meet at the shallow end of the pool at 8:30 AM for our team meeting.  Any changes to our relay line-ups will be announced at the meeting. We will also review our goals for the meet and perform a team cheer.

Dryland Warmup/Cooldown

There will not be warmup/cooldown lanes available during the meet. Swimmers should cooldown after races with light walking and arm movements. 15 minutes prior to races swimmers should begin an easy dryland warmup to prepare for their race. Walking the deck, arm circles and jumping jacks are great ways to prepare muscles for high intensity sprinting.

Relays

Relays are the best part of a swim meet. Swimmers should consider it an honor to be selected to represent the team in a relay event. Each team will be composed of two boys and two girls.  8 under relays are 100 yards in length with each swimmer swimming 25 yards of the race. For all other age groups, relays are 200 yards with each swimmer swimming 50 yards of the race.

Medley relays are composed of one leg of each stroke in the following order: backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle. On freestyle relays, all swimmers swim freestyle. Medley relays take place at the start of the meet and freestyle relays are at the end.

Relays are often revised on the day of the meet. Changes to relays are announced at the team meeting.

If your swimmer is selected for a relay and cannot attend, please contact coach Mehrad at:  [email protected]

Relay teams are below. Please read the chart carefully noting both lane assignment and stroke assignment.
