MSL Dual Meet Recap Week 6: Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions @ Seals and Our '24 All Stars
written by Ian Schwartz (Aili's dad)
suggestions/comments to [email protected]
Score:
It was (another) close one, with the final score being 283 to 274, with the Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions coming out on top.
Our Seniors:
At Saturday’s meet, we honored our graduating seniors Karsten Hakes, Maeve McAuley, and Gino McDonnell (treasured Seals since ages 9, 9 and 11, respectively). We look forward to further recognizing the contributions Karsten, Maeve, and Gino have made to the Seals at our June 30 awards ceremony and banquet.
Saturday’s Triple Winners:
These 4 Seals swam to first place finishes, 3 times, on Saturday. No small feat.
Karsten Hakes (18) 50y Back / 50y Fly / 100y I.M.
Maeve McAuley (18) 50y Back / 50y Fly / 100y I.M.
Eleanor Hoang (14) 50y Back / 50y Breast / 100y I.M.
Theodore Nichols (8) 25y Breast / 25y Fly / 100y I.M.
Saturday’s MSL '24 Best Times:
In addition to first-place finishes - on Saturday, 3 Seals recorded the fastest times seen so far this season, league-wide, for their events:
Karsten Hakes (18) 50y Fly 24.54 & 100y I.M. 59.96
Maeve McAuley (18) 100y I.M. 1:05.13
Eleanor Hoang (14) 50y Back 31.20
Saturday’s Perfect Meet Count:
Swimmers can achieve a best time by improving stroke technique and racing skills. Best times feel great and build confidence. Swimmers have some degree of control of their racing technique and tactics but have no control of who they swim against, so a best time is a better measure of progress than ranking. This is why we focus on best times rather than ranking. Achieving a best time is challenging so if your swimmer achieves a best time, consider it a great meet for your swimmer. Two best times means a swimmer has had an excellent day competing. Three best times is a rare accomplishment and can be considered a perfect meet day for your swimmer. 8 Seals achieved “perfect meets” on Saturday.
Karsten Hakes (18) 50y Back / 50y Fly / 100y I.M.
Colin Judson (17) 50y Breast / 50y Fly / 100y I.M.
Nicole Rekhtman (14) 50y Free / 50y Back / 50y Breast
Isai Lopez (12) 50y Free / 50y Breast / 50y Fly
Bram Klip (9) 50y Free / 50y Back / 50y Breast
Isabelle Cuddeford (8) 25y Free / 25y Back / 25y Breast
Elly Clemenza (7) 25y Free / 25y Back / 25y Fly
Joe Michael (7) 25y Free / 25y Back / 25y Fly

Aging-Up:
“Aging-up” refers to a swimmer’s graduation to the next competing age group on account of their birthday. MSL events are held within 5 age groups: 8-Under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18. As such, “aging-up” occurs at ages 9, 11, 13 and 15. Here’s a sketch of how aging-up operates for our MSL season.
· For Dual Meets - Seals always compete in the age grouping that reflects their age on meet day. If a Seal's birthday falls between, or on, the date of a Dual Meet, the Seal is automatically assigned to the new age group for that Dual Meet. Stroke seed times are zeroed out when a Seal moves to their new age grouping - even if the stroke is the same (e.g., 100Y I.M.).
· For All Stars – for the 2024 season, if a Seal's birthday is June 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15, they compete in their earlier age group at All Stars.
· For Championships (aka Champs) – for 2024 season, if a Seal's birthday is June 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 or 29, the Seal has the choice of competing, for the whole of the meet only, in their prior age group or their new age group. We'll assume you'll swim in your prior age group; if you prefer to compete in your new age group, please inform Coach Mehrad on or before Sunday, June 23rd.

- Saturday June 15: All Star Meet. Archie Williams High School. All welcome to attend.
