Dive Volunteer Role Descriptions

Referee: This is the only position that requires certification.  Confers with judges prior to the start of the meet to give pre-meet instructions, referee the whole meet, and provide judges with any guidance necessary during the meet.  There is one referee per meet, provided by the home team.

Judge: Judging training is recommended for this role, but doesn't require a certification.  The judges watch every dive and provide a score for each dive based on the parameters set forth by the NVSL.  There are 5 judges for each meet.  The home team provides 2, the visiting team provides 3.

Meet Secretary: Keeps all the official results of the meet.  Check all meet sheets for accuracy, ensure all sheets are moving through the process, and get back to the announcer as divers and dives are announced.  Organize all dive sheets before meet by age group, and assign dive order for each age group/gender.  Fill out the Diving Meet Participants sheet, both on paper and online).  Turn in all scores at the end of the meet to the divisional coordinator at the end of the meet (email a photo of the score sheet, then physically mail after the meet, and type in all scores to the online score sheet).  There is one meet secretary per meet, provided by the home team.

Announcer: Sets the atmosphere and controls the tempo of the meet.  Needs to be confident yet gentle, welcomes visiting team, makes any announcements, reads the order of the divers, announces the diver and the dive, after the dive, asks the judges for scores, and read the scores in the same order each time.  Ensures all the sheets are being moved to calculators before moving to the next diver.  There is one announcer per meet, provided by the home team.

Scorers (2): Write down the scores as they are announced, cross off the high and low, and add the remaining three - fill in that total in the total column.  Resolve any discrepancies with the other scorer, then pass the sheet to the calculators.  There are 2 scorers per meet (one from each team).

Calculators (2): Multiply the total score by the degree of difficulty using a calculator.  Add the award total from the previous dive to keep a running total of the award.  The first calculator records the total score on the diver's sheet, and the second calculator checks the work and makes sure the meet sheets stay in order.  At the end of the final round, the second calculator sorts the sheets according to finish and writes the final place on each diver's sheet so the places can be announced.  There are 2 calculators per meet (one from each team).

Ribbon Writer: After the whole round is done (for example, freshman girls) and the calculator has written the final place on each diver's sheet, write the place and score on the provided labels for the meet, put the label on the back of the corresponding ribbon (first, second, third, participant), and staple the ribbon to the dive sheet.  After each round, or after the whole meet, file the dive sheets into the diver's folder in the guard building.  Put all the away team's dive sheets and ribbons into a large envelope to provide to the away team's representative at the end of the meet.  There is one ribbon writer per meet, provided by the home team.
