Mentor Marlins Swim Team is a summer recreation swim team for competitive swimmers ages 4 through 18 as a member of the Suburban Swim Leauge of Northeast Ohio. We welcome all swimmers, but we do require that they are able to safely swim a minimum of one 25 meter pool length unassisted and without stopping for eight and under swimmers and a minimum of 50 meters for nine and up swimmers. Swim meets are held on Saturdays during June and July, culminating with Championships on July 26 & 27, 2025

    • 10 & Under: 8:30-9:30 a.m.
    • 11 & Older: 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

  • Swimmers must attend at least (3) three practices weekly, with more optional. Only two if attending evenings only – but you are encouraged to try to get to at least one morning to get your 3rd practice. Exceptions to this rule will be handled on a case by case basis by the head coach.
  • We understand conflicts may occur; just inform us, and we can often accommodate. Communication is key—please notify coaches at practice or email if a swimmer needs to miss due to reasons like camp, vacations, illness, or appointments.

Cold/Inclement Weather Practice Cancellation Policy:

  • If the outside air temperature is 55 degrees or lower, swimmers will NOT get into the pool for swim practice.
  • Dry-land workouts are determined per the coaches' discretion if the outside air temperature is too cold to swim. On cooler mornings, it is possible that the team will do a dry-land workout before getting into the pool, so swimmers would need to bring shoes and appropriate clothing.
  • If the weather is forecasted to be severe (thunderstorms, heavy rain, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc) before practice, practice will be canceled within 30 minutes before the start.
  • If the weather becomes inclement during practice, swimmers may be required to exit the pool temporarily. If lightning is visible in the area, all swimmers are required to exit the pool. If, after 20 minutes of no lightening present, swimmers may re-enter the pool and continue with practice. If the weather continues to deteriorate, practice will end and swimmers will be recalled from the pool, get dressed and wait for their parents/guardians to pick them up.
  • Notification of practice cancellation / changes will be sent via email, SMS message, and app notification. Team staff (coaches and/or parent board members) will remain at the pool until all swimmers have been picked up. Parents/guardians need to be prepared to pick up their swimmers from practice early if the weather deteriorates.

The Mentor Marlins swim team coaches, parent board members and City of Mentor pool staff will do everything we can to use sound judgment in decision-making with regards to practice cancellations. It is ultimately up to parents/guardians to decide whether to send their swimmers to practice on a day when the weather may be questionable.  There is no penalty for the 3-practices a week requirement when practice gets cancelled; all swimmers will be given attendance credit for the cancelled practice.

Policy For Fee Reimbursement:

If a swim team member decides competitive swimming or the Mentor Marlins Swim Team is not a good fit for him/her and desires to quit the team; it is the policy of the Mentor Marlins Swim Team LTD, as set forth by the Mentor Marlins Parent Board, to reimburse registration fees under the following considerations:

  1. Before or during first week (within first five days) of practice: registration fees will be reimbursed for the full amount paid at the time of the swimmer's initial registration.
  2. During second week of practice: registration fees will be reimbursed at a reduced prorated amount that was paid at the time of the swimmer's registration, to account for coaching and pool utilization during the swimmer's tenure on the team.
  3. If a swimmer decides to quit the team after the second complete week of practice, registration fees will not be reimbursed.

Mentor Marlins Parent Board reserves the right to reconsider these policies on a case by case basis if a swimmer must quit the team due to, but not limited to injury, medical emergency or family emergency/situation.

Please note: the Mentor Marlins is a recreation competitive swim team; we do not provide "swim lessons". Due to the limited resources and increased cost of pool availability, all swimmers are expected to participate in at least 3 dual swim meets.  Swimmers who do not participate in at least 3 dual swim meets will not be entered into the Championship competition.

Behavior Expectations:

  • Any inappropriate, insubordinate/disrespectful or unsafe behavior in the pool, locker rooms, bath rooms or anywhere else inside the pool facility will not be tolerated.
  • Swimmers will be a given a warning for a first offense from team staff or pool staff (lifeguards/pool managers) and may be directed to sit out of the pool temporarily.
  • All behavioral infractions will be reported to the parents/guardians of the swimmer(s) involved.  If subsequent behavior infractions continue, the swimmer(s) may be subject to permanent removal from the team for the remainder of the season without reimbursement of fees paid.
  • The decision to remove a swimmer from the team will be at the discretion of the coaching staff and parent board.
  • Mentor Marlins swimmers are ALWAYS expected to display good sportsmanship, and be respectful to pool staff, coaches, other swimmers and their guests.
