PEEPS Swim Lesson Program
Pennypacker Country Club
For children ages 4–10
About the Program
At Pennypacker Country Club, our swim lesson program—affectionately called PEEPS—is built on a simple philosophy: teach children the skills to swim independently, build confidence, and enjoy the water safely. We do this through a structured, skill-based curriculum emphasizing repetition, consistency, and encouragement.
We do not use flotation devices, and parents do not enter the water. Our instructors are trained to help swimmers gain real, lasting skills in a supportive environment.
If your child is between 4 and 5 years old and does not yet swim independently, the Beginner level is the best fit. Children who are 6 and up and still learning to swim should register for the Advanced Beginner or Intermediate level based on ability (see level descriptions below). A skills assessment will take place on the first day to ensure each swimmer is placed in the appropriate group.
Please Note:
- All swimmers must be at least 4 years old on the first day of their session.
- Swimmers ages 4 and 5 are required to wear a water diaper.
We believe that repetition is the highest form of learning. The goal of our Beginner program is for swimmers to surface and swim across the pool independently by the end of the two-week session. From there, we introduce the fundamentals of freestyle, setting a strong foundation for lifelong swimming.
Class sizes are kept intentionally small to ensure individual attention:
- Beginner & Advanced Beginner: 1 instructor per 5 swimmers
- Intermediate: Stroke clinic-style with a lead coach and in-water assistants
Our staff includes experienced instructors and older swim team members who bring enthusiasm, patience, and a love for swimming to every lesson.
Class Format
- 6 30-minute sessions for Beginner and Advanced Beginner
- Held on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings
- Each session runs for two weeks
Weather Policy & Refunds
As an outdoor pool, classes may be canceled due to inclement weather, including thunderstorms and/or extreme cold. If a cancellation is necessary, families will be notified via email. In these cases, we offer one make-up class per week, which will be held on Friday mornings.
Please note:
No refunds or additional make-up classes will be given for absences due to illness, vacation, or personal scheduling conflicts.
By registering, you acknowledge and accept this policy.
Level Descriptions
Beginner
For children ages 4–5 only
Designed for young swimmers who cannot yet swim across the pool (approx. 40 feet) unassisted by an adult or flotation device.
If your child is 6 or older, please register for Advanced Beginner instead. The Beginner level uses developmentally targeted instruction that is most effective with younger children.
Goal:
- Jump from the side of the pool
- Surface on their back
- Swim across the pool independently
- Grab the opposite wall without help
Each child will receive one-on-one instruction during their turn. Expect some downtime between turns, which is beneficial at this developmental stage for rest, observation, and readiness.
Advanced Beginner
For children age 6 and older who are still learning to swim independently
This level is for older swimmers who may be comfortable in the water but cannot yet swim freestyle with proper side breathing for 20 yards or more.
Swimmers will be evaluated on the first day and placed into one of three subgroups based on skill level. No subgroup selection is needed during registration—simply sign up for Advanced Beginner.
Intermediate
For swimmers who can swim freestyle with proper side breathing
This level runs like a stroke clinic and is designed for swimmers ready to refine their technique and build endurance. To join this group, swimmers must demonstrate:
- Rhythmic freestyle with lateral (side) breathing
- Comfort and safety in deeper water
Swimmers unable to meet these requirements on day one will be reassigned for their safety.
Instruction is led by an on-deck coach, with support from in-water assistants. Ratios may be higher than at other levels, but instruction remains focused and skill-driven.
Skills emphasized:
- Freestyle with improved technique
- Backstroke
- Treading water
- Building stamina for continuous swimming
- Additional skills such as dives and flip turns may be introduced as appropriate based on individual and group progress.
