Early Season Success at Merlion Sprint Festival

Stamford Lions Swim was in action on Saturday 5th October at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore. The competition, known as the Merlion Sprint Festival, was held over the long course format (50m) and saw athletes from many of the international schools around Singapore attend.

Stamford American took 46 athletes that had entered 170 individual races amongst them. The team was quite evenly made up of 93 female entries and 77 male entries showing some strong promise early in the season.

The team delivered a whopping 109 PBs (personal bests) from 157 swims (69.4%). “It’s an exciting time to be involved in aquatics here at Stamford.” said newly appointed Aquatics Director, Paul Dowey. “We have the building blocks to build a swim team.” 22 athletes had 100% PBs on the day.

The team is also bolstered by the support of other coaches from around Campus. “It has been a bit of sprint with Paul arriving just in August.’ said Coach Grace Vertigans. “However it takes more than just one person to produce results.” Both coaches have been keen to acknowledge the hard work by the other members of the team, Coach Liane Marquez, Coach Leonard Lim, Coach Val Sabbioni and Coach Ross Plain.

The results were pretty evident with no fewer than 15 finalists in 28 events. Amongst them there were 3 athletes picking up 5 medals (1 Gold, 1 Silver, 3 Bronze).
