Stamford Lions Swim team Compete at Singapore National Champs 2019

Stamford American International School were in action at the Singapore National Short Course Champs held at Singapore Sports School over the 25m laps. The 2 day meet saw athletes, schools and clubs from around the around Singapore come together to race on the 16th & 17th November in numerous different strokes and distances. The top 16 made finals, with the first 8 swimmers competing in the A finals.

Stamford had 10 athletes who competed over the weekend. 6 of those athletes made 16x finals between them including A Finals & 9 B finals. Finalists included Miles, Lear, Sydney, Axel, Mimi and Cristina.

Special mention is deserved for Sydney who snatched the teams sole silver medal of the competition. She collected a silver medal for Stamford Lions Swim team in the 400m Individual Medley with a storming performance to finish in 5:04. The whole team were on their feet as she hung on to finish strong.

There were indeed a number of very impressive swims, there were 30 PBs from 40 swims (75%). Cristina, Emma, Miles, Lear, Sydney, Axel and Chris all producing lifetime bests. The mixed relay teams also did well and it was great to see the athletes raise their standards.

DAY ONE: Stamford in Action

Stamford American International School are currently in action at the 8th Singapore National Short Course Championships held at Singapore Sports School on Saturday 16th and 17th of November.

The men’s 100m freestyle was first up first and Miles took the water in the same heat as local legend Joseph Schooling. Schooling famously beat Micheal Phelps in the Olympics and its always inspirational to watch him swim. Miles delivered a 55.94 just over his time to finish 28th. Chris swam a half second PB to go 58.88 as did Axel in 59.55. Training partner Jaiden swam a technically excellent race in 1:01.34.

Sydney took to the water in the 100m breaststroke placing 10th in a new PB time of 1:19.91 and a first reserve slot for the final. In the men’s 50m breaststroke Miles posted a 33.82 to finish in 33rd.

In the 200m freestyle Cristina dropped her personal best to 2:18.19 to finish 25th overall.

Miles was back on form in the 100m backstroke with a PB of 1:03.54 to make the B Final. The 50m girls backstroke saw Emma swim a determined 34.40 to place 36th.

In the men’s 200m butterfly Axel posted a 2:20.07 personal best racing this event for the first time short course. He will be second reserve for the final after finishing 10th.

Sydney was in action again and delivered a strong looking 200m IM. She went 2:28.39 PB to finish 5th and a chance to improve later on.

Lear swam a smart looking 400m freestyle easily making it into the final in 4:11.22. He finds himself lying in 6th place. With an ever developing strong mindset he will swim a 400m IM Final and 400m freestyle final tonight hoping to better his results from earlier.

In the 50 freestyle Cristina was the TOP finisher from Stamford with a 28.90 personal best to finish 25th. She was followed closely by Sister Emma in 30.05 with a new PB. Latisha also pushed hard Swimming a 31.18.

Sydney was Swimming a full program this weekend and was up in the 200m backstroke. She dropped her time significantly with a 2:25.36, a massive 2.73 seconds off her previous best and a final place in 6th. Mimi was in the pool a couple of heats later and posted a 2:31.01.

The men’s 50m fly saw Miles make another B final with 27.15 to finish 13th. Team mate Axel was just outside his best after a Long morning in 29.08.

A special mention has to go to Cristina for her attention to detail. She has been outstanding in warming up, Swimming down and her competitive spirit.

Stamford had 10 Athletes competing. So far the team has racked up 13 PBS out of 18 swims. 4 different Athletes made 8 finals (4x A finals & 3x B finals + 1x reserve) between them. The school also has relays tonight with racing starting at 5pm.

DAY ONE: Stamford Finalists

Stamford swimmers were in action at Singapore National Short Course championships held at Singapore Sports School this evening.

Lear was up first in the 400m IM. Big programme for him tonight he was delighted with a 4th place finish and new PB in 4:47.

Sydney clocked 1:21 in her 100m breaststroke final just over her heat time. She finished 15th overall.

Unfortunately with a small slip on the wall Miles finished 13th on his PB in the heats of 1:03.

Sydney was satisfied with a 6th place finish in the 200 IM. She swam a 2:29.

Lear was up again for another brave swim in the 400 freestyle. He was pushing the whole way and went 4:14 to finish a very credible 6th.

Sydney cracked put a 2:27 in her A final. With plenty of racing under her belt it was going to be a tough ask. Ever the resilient personality she pushed hard home all the same to finish 7th.

Miles smashed out his 50 fly in 27.2 with a determined effort. It was a bit of a blanket finish for his B final placing 13th overall.

It was great to see the inclusion of the mixed medley relay teams in this years nationals. The A team finished 10th whilst the B team finished in lucky 13th. Congratulations to Sydney, Miles, Lear, Axel, Cristina, Mimi, Emma & Jaiden.

 

 

DAY TWO: Prelims Stamford go from Strength to Strength

Session 3 and Day 2 at Singapore Short Course Nationals where Stamford swimmers were going from strength to strength. The Singapore Sports School hosting the 25m event.

The women’s 100m freestyle was the first event on the programme and in the first heat it was Mimi who was first up. She swam a strong 1:01 to place 16th and scrape into the B final tonight. There was a sibling rivalry taking place in the freestyle with Emma and Sister Cristina going head to head. Emma posted a 1:06 whilst her Sister was charging down the pool in an impressive 1:02, great swims girls!

In the 200m freestyle Lear just narrowly missed dropping below the 2 minute mark posting a PB of 2:00.65. He qualifies for tonight’s B final, knowing he can go 1:59.

Lear was the sole boys representative in the 200m IM something he really enjoys. He swam a well paced race to better his time in 2:16. He will get another chance to go below 2:15 later ranking 10th for the B final.

In the 100m butterfly Axel swam a solid 1:02 to make his first individual B final, something he was delighted about and has confidence to go even faster tonight.

Sydney and Mimi, training partners entered the 100m backstroke event. Sydney placed 7th in 1:08 to secure her A final spot whilst Mimi went 1:11.

Miles was in action in the 50m backstroke. Enjoying the shorter sprint races he delivered some great underwater work on the turn to post a 28.70. He finished 10th overall.

Mimi had a crack at the 400m freestyle. With some rather consistent splitting she posted a 4:43 to make the final. There we some battles happening in the following heats and Cristina came out on TOP winning her heat in 4:43. An outstanding swim and dropped her entry time by 13 seconds. She will join Mimi in the B final. Sister Emma also better her entry time with a 5 minute performance, having to pull out all the stops on the last lap to maintain her position.

Miles was in action again in the 50m freestyle event. He bettered his time to 24.40 after a great start making the A final in 8th. Axel also bettered his time with a 26.82 whilst Jaiden was able to post a 28.44, competing at his first nationals. His buddy Chris improved his time to 27.22 for bragging rights this time around.

Sydney was last up with her 50m butterfly and she raced strong down the first lap. Unfortunately she just couldn’t maintain her momentum and was only slightly over her time in 31.13.

The team added another 11 PBS from 17 swims to their running total this morning. The total now stands at 25 PBs from 36 swims (69.44%).

Tonight the team will see relays and 5 finalists in 9 events (3x A finals, 6x B finals). This bolsters their total to 17 finals from 6 different swimmers (7x A and 9x B finals).

DAY TWO: Finals – Lions on the Warpath

Stamford American won their first medal at Singapore National Short Course Championships!!!

Sydney was the first silver medalist for Stamford American International School in the 400m Individual Medley with a storming performance to finish in 5:04 this evening. The whole team were on their feet as she hung on to finish so strong.

Mimi was in a competitive race with a 1:02 in her 100m freestyle B final.

Lear showed some guys when all his fellow finalists were on the same 2:00 entry time from this morning. He was out in front fended off attacks from the outside lane. His 1:58 was simply an awesome swim.

Axel was in great form for his 100m butterfly. He bettered his time to 1:02 in his B final.

Sydney was up again pushed hard on her 100m backstroke with a 1:07 to finish 7th overall.

In the 200m IM Lear swam in determined fashion to go faster that his heat swim in 2:16.

In the 400m freestyle B final Cristina and Mimi were in action and both posted 4:44 times.

In the 50m A Final Mikes finished 7th in Singapore with a 24.19. Great result racing against some of the best swimmers in Singapore.

The relay teams were clearly special, both teams electing to gather together as group and psych each other up. They finish 10th and 11th respectively with everyone swimming on their best 50m times despite being the blast event of a long weekend.

What a great environment for the Stamford team to be part of! The team celebrated with donuts courtesy of the Eldar family!
