Swimmers are “IM Ready” at Stamford American Meet
The Lions Swim Academy hosted their first swim meet over the weekend for Elementary, Middle and High School athletes. The meet, known as ‘SAIS IM Ready’, is a nod towards the concept of developing an all-round swimmer.
There was some significant coordination and organising from multiple departments to make it possible. The AV team loaned the microphone and speakers, the Maintenance Department assisted with the setup of tents and touchpads, the Nursing Department assisted with medial reports, parents assisted with timekeeping, Camp Asia assisted with safe management, the IT Department assisted in get computers to communicate and Coach Heikal’s wife Dayanna provided the food.
The meet saw Elementary student-athletes race on Saturday 24th April between 1pm-5pm. On Sunday 25th April, the Middle and High School athletes were in action. All school groups were separated into Group A and Group B to meet restrictions.
There were 259 Personal Bests from 288 swims across the 2 days. “This was another great opportunity for swimmers improve upon their times. We like to keep tabs on progress, one way we track improvement across squads is our percentage improvement and we had a massive 89.93% PB percentage!” said Aquatics Director, Paul Dowey. "We had 3 athletes setting 5 new school records. Katie broke the 11yrs 50m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley. Sera broke 13yrs 50m breastroke record. Emma broke 14yrs 100m backstoke and 14yrs 100m Breaststroke records. Congratulations girls!"
“This event was a test event for our upcoming Virtual Junior SEASAC meet. We learnt a lot even from Day 1 to Day 2.” said Grace Vertigans, Lead Swim Coach. “We streamed our event through Google Meet and we realised that by adding some additional commentary on Day 2 we could really bring the event to life.”
The team received special permission to have parents onsite to help officiate the meet. “We are grateful for the volunteers help, we couldn’t have run this event without them.” said Paul. Coaching staff did their best to motivate swimmers and some music definitely enhanced the atmosphere above the noise of cheering.
