Character Training

Sherry Johnson

This is where we will put all notes for character training

4/13: Last night was fabulous! yall did great and I loved all the smiles you got! we can settle for that, or we can continue honing our craft and  work on being better. We're so fortunate to have Ms M with us.. I'm impressed with her skill, dedication and love for you all!

I noticed some of you slipped in and out of character (mostly with your voice - some of you didn't even change your voice) and some didn't realy know their character : I believe march 12 or 19th was when characters were assigned and then I posted here on March 25 ... There should not have been any confusion about what character you were assigned, you had 2 classes to ask questions.  We're building professionalism here and part of that means YOU taking initiative to stay on top of what is expected.  If you're having trouble, or confused about something, please don't wait till the last minute to ask.

NEXT CLASS is May 7th 6:30-8pm.

NEXT OUTING:  is May 11th at the Factory of Columbia from 1:00 to 2:00.  We will meet at the school at 12:00 to get into costume.  Please come with your hair prepared for a wig. here is a video on preparing hair for wig.  Guy's and gals with short or long hair the key is getting the hair off the face and FLAT to the head.  Bumps will show up under the wig and make things a little weird looking.

For Saturday the 20th of April: please confirm with me that you are available.  Emma as Drizella, Milly as Anastasia , Libby as Cinderella, Sue as Fairy godmother and Mable as Step Mother.  (Mabel, is it possible to do this without glasses?  If not, can we put the glasses a little further down on your nose? ) I need confirmations by Tuesday Please - This is another chance to work on that voice.  Here is a scene with cinderella and her sisters.  Notice the body posture : where are their shoulders? High up to their ears? pulled back and upright? forward and timid? , and voice of each.  Cinderella is breathy and forward a bit.  Lots of WH in the words. Notice the step sister walk... oh my.. that is fun for the audience to see. Look how forward Drizilla carries herself.  Her chest is way over her toes. Step mother's voice is very chesty and snobbish.. She almost rolls some of her words. Lots of "AH" shaped words, like "BAHgain" it's very transatlantic. (you can look that word up and watch this video) Drizilla is a deep nasal where Anastasia is a brighter nasal, almost ear piercing.

There's a lot of homework, but that's what separates the pros from the amatures.  You can make a living being an actor, even locally.  You can assure yourself a much better success rate in auditions by being the one who is prepared.  Directors have a keen sense of those who "wing it" and if given the choice, they'll choose the prepared over the "winging it" every time.

again, great job Friday night!  Let's do this!  I'm so proud of each of you and could not be more thrilled with the comrodery between you.

CHARACTER ASSIGNMENTS: Garrison: Wonka, Drizilla Mabel, Anastasia Libby, Brave/Merida Emma and Aurora Milly.

See you later! Oh done by 8pm back at school

3/25: Be working on your characters!!!  Next Training is April 20th 6:30-8:00

April 20th: I’d love to have Libby = Cindrella, Milly = Anastasia, Emma as Drizzella, and Mabel as Wicked Step Mother Lady Tramaine.  we will have a rehearsal Thursday night April 18th from  6:00-7:00pm.  This is a paying gig, so please do your homework and find your character voice -much like Disney’s as possible.  Find the rhythm of how they speak and where their voice goes up or down - do they talk fast or slow - is it a chest voice, or airy head voice?  Also how do they stand?

character training: here is the link for Mandygleamglo who has the fun training tutorials for voices.  You don’t have to copy her or think "I don’t ever want to be a princess so this doesn’t pertain to me" it does!  listen to how she describes the voices, placement, geography of the character voice... it’s important to know how to pick apart a voice.  (you’ll need to have an instagram account to find her )

assignments: Cinderella =Maddie, Cindy Lou Who= mabel, Merida/Brave= Emma, Charlie Brown = Garrison, Milly = Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel = Libby
